New to the site and loving it -- Thought I would add some photos of my 10x20 YURBIN -- YURT/CABIN -- It's basically a screen house by day but I've added heavy canvas sides that velcro down whnen it's cold. I have a Vermont Castings Aspen that keeps the inside warm -- so warm that even when its near zero I need to open some of the canvas. It's located outside of Idaho Springs in the Arapahoe National Forest. I built it because we had a nice little 900 sf cottage on the property but it has recently been added onto to create a huge5000sf custom home on the property. It's so nice that people rarely ventured outside anymore. The Yurbin is a completly different experience as it has no power other than D cells and cooking is done on the fire pit. mancastle.jpg

Thanks -- last week there was a moose in the creek -- I knew we had them in Colorado but at least a hundred miles to the north -- it was a great treat --

Very nice!
I have a cast iron stove on my deck at my house. Let's see if I can add a picture of the deck (I designed it but had help building it as I built the last one and did not have time to do it myself).
I have to figured out how to add one to the cabin plans as I keep thinking I am going to die in my sleep due to carbon monoxide poisoning.. lol

Beautiful job -- I like the tile! Our little sceened cabin is the same idea -- you can enjoy sitting outdoors but protected under a roof and out of any rain or snow -- and the woodstove takes the chill off -- Good thing those C O detectors run on batteries since I refuse to bring 110 down the hill.

Spent the weekend working on the Yurbin -- added 10 x 6 lofts on either end to store some new cedar winter window/ shutters when the weather is warm also enough room for some folding cots and chairs as well -- the lofts are still 10 feet off the floor and the center of the cabin still is open to the roof so the feel is still very open. I also started buliding a redwood bench / locker that will house our inflatable queen size mattress and bags and hopefully our cooking kit as well -- I envision it much like an RV set-up where a table will fold down between the locker and a moveable bench to make a queen size sleeping platform -- no camera today but I'll post some pics next time I head up ..

I was actually debating the same thing, a loft on each end instead of just 1 end. Why waste the space, right? I was curious how one single window unit would handle cooling those two in the summer though.
Looking forward to the pics.

For me at 9000 ft in Colorado I never gave any thought to cooling off the lofts -- sounds as though for you -- it would be an issue --- I'm assuming you have power since you have talked about AC -- a ceiling fan between the 2 would do the trick and uses very little juice.

I was thinking the same thing. Our "electricity" would be a 7000 watt portable generator, that runs on propane and then I would have a 250 gallon propane bottle outside so I do not have to keep filling it.. heh. (not sure if you can hook up a 250 gallon propane bottle directly to a portable generator like you can a small propane bottle yet). Anyway, I was thinking a ceiling fan in reverse would pull the cool air up or push the hot air down, like you said..
I just hate to waste all that extra space by not having a loft on both ends.
Keep those pics coming on the cabin :)

Thanks -- The Mortar mix in the corner was to be used this weekend putting river rock onto the dura rock behind the stove. Unforunately as I started the project by splitting some cedar pickets for a border the table saw split my thumb as well. Didn't lose it and missed all the tendons and bones -- 22 stitches later good as new --- I was in a rush to get to the actual rock laying --- haste does make waste.

Thanks -- T-H -- I think the rock will help store some heat from the stove - Saw your thread on turning your camp into a barn and building a new place -- how's it coming or did you decide it was a'great camp after-all?

Finished up the exterior chimney chase rock work -- purely cosmetic --but we had the cultured (fake) rock left over from the big cabin. I think it helps the place look a little less shack and a little more cabin. We also installed a front gutter system to avoid last winters skating rink on the front patio. We had enclosed the lofts a few weeks ago but I forgot to get pics. Gotta finish up sealing up the soffit with some cedar trim boards and I'm afraid to say I think this ones ready for the done list -- oh never mind I still need to buid a bench / table that converts into a bed -- rock_1.jpg

Thanks all --
Here's the new dining nook that doubles as a queen size bed -- the table drops onto the benches /locking chests to make a platform for our queen size Coleman mattress. One of the chests provides some great locking storage for the mattress and bedding and the other stores charcoal and cooking gear. Beautiful time of year .. and a kind friend moved out of his house and donated a really sturdy wood rack to the cause.. aspen.jpg
