Just found this forum! I’ve had a forestry parcel up next to the National Park for 10 years or so. I’m up on a mountain and want to build a small cabin as a climbing/snowshoeing mountain hut.

Nice looking view. You hiking stuff in or is it accessible by truck/atv?
Oops I should try reading the title. Let me know how the hike in works. Im in build process away from truck access and have been thankfully able to atv materials in. Its basically more work than the actual construction thus far.

It’s a 7 mile drive up a mountain road through forestry property owned by a Pacific NW Timber company, then it’s a half mile hike in, through a trail we roughed in last year. It’s a labor of love, that’s also why it’s only 14 x 14 😂🤣😂.

I built a cabin with my grandfather around 2000 he was an engineer it was 600 sq/ft. Then we built a 400 sq/ft cabin next door, all the bells and whistles, in ground propane tank, auto start propane generator, well. I sold both of those a few years ago to pay off my house. I’ve had this insane mountain property for 20 years and I thought long and hard about what I missed the most, and Just super small, simple, in the forest, small footprint that you can really feel you’re up in the Mountains. I’ve based the design off these trail shelters we have here in our National Park....

I love those! Frontier basics. Was thinking of going that way myself if we found suitable ground for Cabin II after losing Cabin I after the folks died and farm got sold. Then we found our current place Aug. 2019 with a rough off-grid/dry cabin in place already

I built a couple cabins (mainly I held the dumb end of the tape measure) as I said. I lived up on this mountain in Western Washington, you had to snowshoe in during winter, I had one neighbor a 75 year old friend, he lived in a 14x16 small pine tree frame cabin, dirt floor, roof, walls made from sheet metal scrap he got for free from Craigslist. He had 5 dogs, always collecting strays, and I tell you I was always incredibly ENVIOUS of him!ðŸ•ðŸ•ðŸ•ðŸ•ðŸ•

With the wet June we’ve had this year in the PNW, I’ve been able to get a lot of the slash removed from the 6 Doug fir I had to take out…. Whoever said expect your site prep to take much longer than expected they were incredibly prophetic 😂

When your doing it by hand it can take for ever. Site prep is almost more important than a foundation though. Alot of cabins have issues with both site prep and foundations and can be major work after the fact.
We spent 2 weekends removing alone for the site of our 20x30 with an excavator. I own the machine so some of those days where 10hr. This didnt include drainage swales or post compaction re grading, or brush removal.

No matter how big you build it, build it as if you'll want to stay there a while and be comfortable doing so. With a site/view like that, you will.

Many years ago I flipped houses and I had one simple rule don’t buy anything that if the market crashed you wouldn’t be happy living in!
It’s slowly getting there another few weekends of raking and shoveling. I’m more worried about the ants 🜠and termites getting into my lumber cache than being in any particular hurry. I found when I would have excavators and bulldozers in on other projects the temptation is to do more clearing than you should because you’ve gone to all the expense and time of getting the machines in, doing it by hand makes you a bit more conservative 😂
A couple of pics from last weekend, I’m trying to give myself a 4 foot clearance all around the building so I have space to put a ladder…

Erik, I grew up in a little logging town close to your area, I know the area well, my dad was a scoutmaster and did the big 50 and 100 mile hikes on the Olympics. did lots of hiking with him, ie Mildred lakes, flapjack lakes, upper and lower lena, mt ellinoir, staircase, Gladys divide. Our trail heads were usually up by Cushman area.
I just built myself a park shelter, my entire theme on my 40 acres is USFS or US Parks and state parks. I have a full ranger cabin campsites etc.
Here is my park shelter. I still live in Western WA, but my 40 acres in N Central WA

Personally I would go a bit further than removing trees within 4ft but I dont know the area. Either way I would walk back into the woods in a circle around the build site and also take out any trees that are rotted, dead or have major top damage that could fall on your cabin or be a major job to remove later.

Ive have erred in not clearing back far enough  , really do suggest you go farther. As they get bigger it gets harder to do....
Been to a bunch of places with the trees too close, seems to be a common 'mistake'.

That’s really cool. I work up at Cushman and I live down on the fjord in a small logging town called Potlatch.
There’s a couple of quite large Boy Scout camps here on hood canal. I remember being up on del monte ridge in back of Mt. Constance and there’s this huge stacked stone shelter the Boy Scouts made back in the 40’s.
I always wanted to build a Olympic Mountain Trail Shelter, which I’m going to do someday, somewhere else on my 75 acres in the future, but I wanted a winter staging area so I’m keeping the 14x14 size of the shelter, but it won’t be three sided it’ll be enclosed. I am keeping the roof profile though so it will have the same visual look.
There’s a great website called Windsox I’m new to this forum or is add a link. This gentleman has done an enormous amount of research and documentation of the Olympic National Parks shelters. I contacted him once asking for advice he said: “I’m too old. Good Luck.†Which was kind of touching. 😂

The advice on clearing back far enough is certainly wise. I have a decent grasp of forestry and the trees around me are sound. I actually want the trees to grow up around this cabin, in any other circumstance I’d agree whole heartedly ðŸ‘. In this area I’d have to clear for 100 ft. around me to remove any tree that might be a widow-maker in a strong fall storm. 🌲🌲🌲 I’m more worried about ants and termites by keeping the forest margin so close ðŸœ

Finally got back up on the mountain and managed a few more weeks worth of work. The site prep took longer than expected but we managed to haul in some pavers and pedestals. Here are some pics:

Great start!
For me, once the 'foundation' and deck was done the walls went up quick, then the roof slowed me back down.
