Buksnbears - Great design on the cabin! Good looking put up's on the yotes. What's with the tags? Is that your numbering system or something?

Here are a few videos of my cabin and property. Each is less than 30 seconds. Most were taken with sunglasses with an embedded camera...so they are a little shaky.

The cabin is pretty much move in ready. The garage / shop is another story... Since that is where I spend most of my time, it's gonna get some immediate attention. I'll start building a log shed or sauna in the spring, get a garden in place and then just sit back and fish.

Austin.. congratulations on the buy! The place looks awesome. How many acres did you get with it?
You going to need to buy a tractor now? (that was one expense I wasn't planning for when I bought my place this past March).
Any plans to go off-grid?

It has been 3 years since we bought our cabin so I thought I would post a few updated photos. Original post was on page 4. Most of the urgent repairs are complete. The wrong-way roof trusses are sistered with correctly-oriented 2x6s to the end of the overhangs (every 2nd truss) and 2x4s inside. In summer 2012 we cut the roof system from the walls and used come-alongs and sledges to hammer the walls straight (or close). I completely replaced the floor system at one end with foundation grade PT wood. We added some vintage diamondpane windows and 2 doors. Totally redid the interior to have 2 bedrooms and a kids room separated by a curtain. I also built a 12v LED lights system using Helieon lights which I cannot recommend enough, these are dimmable, bright, warm white, and use hardly any juice. Finally last month I put a stove in...what a difference! Next spring is deck, ceiling, and connect the propane appliances. Love being up there! Only issue is security - some locals seem to think the cottage area is their own personal playground for theft and vandalism. We've been lucky so far, neighbours not so much. Pretty sure we've lucked out only since we're not visible from the main road.

I am thrilled to have come across this site. I am enjoying all of the cabins and feeling so inspired. My husband and I are looking at a cabin right now and planning on a move as soon as possible. I didn't realize so many people across the country are doing this, not feeling too crazy now. My teenage kids are not thrilled but I am hoping to change their minds about that, how can anyone not love a cabin in the woods?

tamarruth>>It is an experience like no other. As for your children it might not be their thing but if they are outdoor minded I would think they will come around. There is so many things that they can enjoy at the cabin but will have to have some imagination and find their thing. Good luck and have fun!

I'd like to see more videos, rather than still pictures... since you can get a better sense of the land. Anyone else have videos?
Here's a video of my place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmWpnxstPSM
We're mostly working on the land now... building walking paths so that we can get to other parts of the property easier, so we can enjoy it.

A few photos of our (new) second home. Also my first post here on the forums. Been reading a lot, and getting ideas from people. Figured it's finally time to start sharing.
We're relatively new owners of this gem, and just made our second trip this past weekend. Still learning a lot, with most of this trip just doing some maintenance, raking leaves, and trimming back some low hanging limbs to make the views a little more clear.
Located in Michigan, in the Manistee National Forest. Cabin

Thanks Turkey!
We're about 60-70 feet uphill from the river, which means no flooding - or if it does... we've all got much bigger problems to worry about.
Steelhead run is just about over. This fall we'll get salmon, brown trout, some brooks, and maybe even some rainbows. At least that's what I've heard from the previous owner. Still gotta spend some time talking to locals to get some ideas on techniques, and when the runs start / end.
Here's a few shots of the river. Had a really nice flood since our last visit - rose and dropped probably 5-6 feet while were were gone. Nice thing is, the flood dumped a few hundred more yards of sand on our shoreline. 20150403_132446.jpg

No, the picture make them look closer than they are. They really are pretty quiet. We ride ATV's up to them all the time.
