Here in Ontario if you can keep it hidden for 75 years I believe, the property becomes yours and the building is allowed to stay. My wife knew of one old structure that sat for I think 73 years before it was found out. I think the family thought it was legal all along and went to inquire about a building permit. They lost the building due to trying to follow the rules.

jtcabin - my thoughts are that

a) it's a cool idea
b) not sure about the ethics of it
c) you could accomplish all 3 of your goals by buying a small lot somewhere

I think you won't go to jail for making a cabin or ask your authorities

Hey, you just might try goldmining a claim, you may enjoy it. It can be a fun hobby, maybe small return if any at all. But if you dont mind doing some prospecting, you can do a claim and be all legal and enjoy a fun past time to boot. Look into it, get all the right paperwork done to keep it all legal. Its no fun if you are always looking over your shoulders anyway. Just be sure to be working the claim and renew it when its up.

Just don't do it. I'm a retired Special
Agent for the USFS, and all of the schemes mentioned here have been tried and they failed. They grow illegal pot out there too, there are people out looking and illegal cabins always seem to get found. I've hiked into many of them, and we removed them some with fire and some with explosives.
The 1872 mining law applies to NF, but there are a lot of exceptions, and there is a staff of geologist there to examine and challenge the phony claims.
Just don't do it.
You probably won't go to jail, but it is a possibility depending on the circumstances.
