This is not for me, but for my cabin neighbor that I just met in West Virginia. Her property is about same size as mine (~150 acres). She is a widow and mentioned that she is having a hard time keeping up with the property maintenance. She wondered if it was possible to find someone to stay at her place for cheap and in return they would help maintain the property. She doesn't have/use a computer, so I said I'd post on this forum to see if there was any interest. If so, I can put her in touch with you. (I will help screen candidates initially, since I suggested this to her, but also because you'd essentially become my neighbor).

She has 2 houses side-by-side, so if someone were interested in this type of arrangement, you'd essentially get one of the houses all to your self. The property is in Capon Bridge, WV (about 20 minutes west of Winchester, VA). At this point, I don't know what her idea of "stay for cheap" means, but I at least wanted to get this conversation started.

Anyone interested or can you suggest a good, safe way for her to find this type of assistance?

I am a middle aged (53) retired bachelor and quite handy with tools. I would be interested in more information about the offering. I currently am selling my home of 16 years in western Washington and will be moving east. Not sure where...just east.

I've never put out a post like this, or on behalf of someone else, so not sure what other details you need. Post some questions, and I'll share with her when I head out to the cabin tomorrow.

Greenacres, I wish you well in your journey and harbor no hard will. That being said RedTailHawk's cabin neighbor should be looking into backgrounds and references before making a decision about who to let live on her property. There are a lot of good people out there who could benefit from that kind of situation. There are also a lot of bad people who would be happy to take advantage of the same situation. A good story and a straight face without background information and checks could make for the beginning of a sorrowful tale. I am being cautious and pessimistic about my fellow man, and woman for that count. Recently I have seen too many bad people and not enough good ones. I would suggest your neighbor invest in a background check program for potential grounds keepers. Better be forewarned than an unwitting accomplice. Sorry to throw out the bad karma.

She should contact a employment agent that does background checks. She would have to pay for the service but background checks and references are in place.
