Hello all,

Trying to plan out a small cottage and would like to know how the max truss roof over hang is calculated. This will be an unsupported overhang over the exterior wall. We do not want it to count as sq footage as we are at the max for our allowable size. Had heard its maybe 4' max in Ontario but was wondering if there is an exact calculation to get my max length.

Thanks so much

I don't know anything about Ontario rules, but here in Connecticut I built a 4' overhang onto my house. It's not supported to the ground, but is braced with struts going back down to the exterior wall at a 45° angle. Done like that, could be even more than 4' overhang, at least from a structural standpoint.

Fwiw, and not to your specific question but rather practicality, we had a 4' on the old shack and liked it; thing is rain seems to rarely come straight down and the snow line didn't get back to the walls.

Overhang distance for a truss must be calculated in the engineering design for the truss. You can't just plop a 20 foot wide truss intended for a 16 foot wall to wall span and place it on walls that are spaced 12 feet apart. This is because the point loads (where the truss sits on the wall) on the bottom of the main truss chord must be able to bear the roof weight. So, IMO, decide how much overhang you want and ask the truss company what they can do.

Building sizes are virtually always the measurements of the on-the-ground footprint.

I'm up near Algonquin Park (so you know I get heaps of snow). Roof Pitch is 10:12 so pretty steep and I have 24" of overhang to ensure the snow get's far enough away from the building sides... For the most part it does BUT 2 years ago, the shedded snowbanks that resulted were measured to 6'2" in height by the time spring showed up before the melts AND I even shovelled the top off in Januray as it was really high then.

How the overhangs are done depends a lot of your roof build (pitch/angles). The easier option with a steeper roof is to have the roof in 2 levels _/\_ versus just /\ and that could allow you to put a surrounding porch (old farmhouse style).

ONTARIO HAD A GOOF !
A couple of years ago they tried to use satellites to see what folks were up to and for a short period they used that to calculate square footage... that FAILED including in court so they don't do that anymore. They are trying to refine it but fact that measuring roof side does not equate to living square footage. BUT with FORD prettending to be King of Ontario in his City State of Toronto, they may just try again.

They have to find a LOT of money to pay off a big hole they created. 10 Million+ License plates @ $140 ea that have had 3 years of being "FREE" which s "missing cash" the Gov didn't bother to collect.... Big Pile to replace from "somewhere".
