Was wandering my trails and spotted my resident cougar, a young 2 year old, I was above him a couple hundred feet away, he was minding his own business so I cleared my throat to let him know I was there, he looked straight at me and gave a half hearted hiss so I pulled out my boat horn, (small compressed air powered) and gave it a toot and that cat easily jumped 6 feet straight up, landed and took off like a shot the opposite direction, something new and effective to my non lethal just in case protection, good to know it really works.

Wow! Second thread in two days where someone stumbled upon a cougar. Good call on the boat horn and glad that a Plan B or C wasn't required

You are a lucky person to see a mountain lion. Not many people get that chance to see one in the wild.
I have also been lucky twice to run into a cat and a very exciting experience. I have found a few lion kills and they are very elusive animal.

It's like I tell my wife when we walk in the woods. We can't outrun a bear. However I know I can outrun you😜

Had a buddy deer hunting with friends in a good sized group camp, this was about 2 weeks ago. They had the tag for deer, bear and cougar. And they were all around camp one time and all of a sudden, they were being stalked by the big cats. 3 of them shot the cat, a 4th one shot and missed. They had 3 cats on about an hours time. They were being stalked. Anyway, 3 cats hanging up all in one day. None of them had ever anticipated getting a cat. Big animals I might add too. This place was north of my cabin about 40 miles. cats.jpeg

Those are some nice sized cats. There is always someone around our camp who knows someone who 'saw a cat' recently, but I've never had one on my many trail cameras nor have a seen one in a pic.
Amazing there were that many in one area.

They think it was mom, dad and 2 offspring. Yes, 4 in one area is unusual. I was surprised at how big they were when you have a person to compare them with.
Another animal that is much bigger than you think is wolves. They were re-introduced into my state and fish and wildlife have been deliberately underestimating their numbers (I have an inside source) and if you think they are about the size of a German Shepard or Husky, you are mistaken. These things are massive when compared to dogs.
I have wolves at my cabin now also. After hearing about my buddies 4 cats in his hunting camp, I am going to start carry my pistol as I move around my 40 acres.

Plan B was Pepper spray gel good for 30 feet which is too close but renders large dogs harmless and whimpering for several minutes while I make an exit, no doubt would work on a big kitty.
Round here sightings are rare and it just reafirms that one must pay attention at all times because we do share space, I have no doubt this cat was passing through as there has been a lot of logging around here displacing the natives, if he becomes a problem my friends at tribal fish and wildlife will trap and relocate him where he can live his life as he should.
