Wow. Just finished our first meal of fresh smelts. First day in the shack too. Caught 36 in 5 hours. Spearing them. Just an awesome day.
More confirmation that homesteading and producing as much of our own food as we can is THE way to go.
Anyone else enjoying ice fishing?

Just a great day. Here's a couple of pics. The shack pic was prior to getting it on the ice.

I have been fishing for Walleye in the in the same river on the same bend for 60 years . You'd think after that long , I would be good at it ,But NO, BEEN OUT 8 TIMES not one fish !! So when the neighbor stopped to ask how many I had caught . I accused her of not protecting the fish stalk for my personal use . She said her husband must have left the gate open again . GO figure , I thought it was BAD LUCK , FISH STICKS AGAIN TONIGHT .Quoting: w8n4rut fresh fried walleye

that's a nice looking shack. and what a feast.
i luv ice fishin'. tho my style is more in the "yoopers" tradition. i fondly remember the time we had to call my wife because we were all to happy to drive home. and it was 2 in the morning.
she laughed and laughed.
good luck guys.
and here's my hut from back in the day.

i have ice fished not for smelt. here we dip the net into the water and draw up a load of smelt. we use to get several five gallon buckets of smelt in no time. me and the old guy and the kids. take them home.i would for the most part clean them.i love them with a bit of oil over top and salt and broil in over till so crispy...and with rice. now for many years the smelt runs have disappeared. in the old days when i was a girl.we lived on the st.marys river and could walk to Canada on the frozen river ...we would ice fish and ice skate.such good memories. now i have to go look to see if the smelt are running.
