Black snake. I was really happy to see it, as this is the first snake I've seen since we've had our cabin (got it in March). I just don't want to see any copper heads or rattlers though.

Yes, I let him be... black snakes are good!
I also read that 90% of bites from copperheads and rattlers happen when people try to kill them. People unsuccessfully attack the snake, and then then snake attacks back.
On the other hand... i have been wanting to get one of those pistols that shoot .410.

I have a Bond Snake Slayer. Its a stainless double barrel .410 derringer. Beautiful pistol with rosewood grips. If anyone would like, I will send a picture.

The Judge...
We've got a black snake at camp that is about 3" in diameter and 6-8' long. Our mountain top has been free from Rattlesnake / Copperheads for sometime...he's got quite the reputation and has been around a while (I'm told).

RichInTheUSA Sorry Rich but I haven't checked the forum for a while. I'm at the cabin now and will load a pic of the snake slayer when I get home. Peace my fellow Virginian!!

Yup, generally the blacksnakes won't tolerate copperheads and rattlers and drive them off. There's several very healthy ones around my sawmill. We get along as well as can be expected. I like to have them there to keep the rodents under control but it is a little disconcerting to be unstacking a pile of stickered lumber and find one laying in the pile.

Hey, no problem Salty.
I saw another 3ft black snake last weekend. So far that's the only two I've seen. I don't mind seeing them at all.... there's just the initial startle, that's all. I leave them be.
