I've been wondering this for a while. We have so many ferns and weeds at the cabin and it takes a long time to beat them back with a hand sickle or even the weed whacker. Sometimes we mow the driveway along with the clearing but there has to be a better solution.I hate seeing the driveway overgrown. Do any of you spray vegetation killer? I would feel bad if it harmed the deer or other wildlife.

Try the strongest vineagar you can find and spray it directly on the plants you want killed...Works great! Non toxic and friendly to the environment! Dont use round up it has been finally proven to actually stay in the soil for 10 yrs + and be taken up by plants that we eat..its compounds have been found in just about all milk producing women! I know we have been all told for the last 15 yrs that Round up breaks down into its basic compounds within 24 hrs and disipates into the soil...more Monsanto Lies!!!!

plant bushes (shrubs) and keep back the weeds until the shrubs have been established and out compete and kill off the weeds. its not a lawn but a variety of nut and berry producing bushes will benefit wildlife and you, require no mowing, put some trails arround and in between, use wood chip mulch on walkways.
distilled (white) vinegar will kill any green vegetation, it is a food product and when its been diluted by rain it breaks down into sugars. we use it to control wetland weeds, add a little dish soap to help it stick

The ferns are pretty, but there are a ton-the weeds not so much. I just want a little weedless space around the cabin and the driveway. I want to keep those areas as tick free as possible and just a little better kept looking.

BTW, I had English ivy growing up my trees. I found out that if I just cut the base of the ivy, the ivy dies and falls out of the tree in short sections in about a year.

Dont spray poison around your property for grass. Get a weed burner or deal with it. There are alreaty to many people turning to chemicals now a days.
You could also put more fine gravel on your driveway like stone dust and that will help keep the grass down.
