Sadly after being serenaded every night since May it seems the frogs have finished mating

Last night no sounds and tonight no sounds either. I am really going to miss listening to them! They were so loud they could be heard even with the AC on. Usually they only mate in May it seems but this year it was an extra long time! Hope they had fun! LOL!

Funny!

Actually there is one sad frog out there that has been trying tonight but nobody has answered his call-he's quiet again right now...I think he gave up. I told my 81/2 year old to hurry up and go find him cause he might be a prince...she said he would have to come to her! Jeepers! LOL!!

All I hear are crickets and a train rumbling over the distant tracks while blowing it's horn. I love being able to sleep with the windows open!

There are no Frogs mating in Detroit unfortunately . I have no idea what a mating frog sounds like.
I will have to Google that.

Be careful doing that research, Naturelover. You might get a bunch of hits on French porn sites! Not that that's a bad thing.

My guess would be not very freaking good!

LOL Martian!

Naturelover,
you would love the sounds that come from these frogs and there are so many it is soooooo loud. The male calls out to impress the female and they more or less have what sounds like a back and forth conversation. Pretty cool. Last week when we had family staying from out of town they were like "what is THAT?????" they don't have the frogs in Florida or Hawaii.

I'm sure there will be more. It seems there are several different species that take turns for a while yet.

That would be awesome Owen but here at home it has always just been in May until this year. Also I was thinking about up north there were so many tadpoles in the puddles of standing water but we never hear frogs there-wish we did. Do you?

Why do fireflies (lightening bugs) have such a short season too and yet those pesky mosquitoes annoy us all summer long???

Spring peepers are finishing , but wood frogs and some others are comming. I think a few species of tree frogs chirp all summer. They sound like a bird.

I will have to do like naturelover and research these other types on google to see how they sound-maybe I just don't realize that is what I'm hearing at other times. Hope you are doing ok Owen.

I'm good, thanks. If you hear birds at night, there's a good chance it's a frog. Unless it asks ''who''.

Up until June 14th of this year, the sounds of frogs and birds have eluded me, unless you count the ringing in the ears (sounds like a warm summer night in my head all the time) I'm happy to say I have my hearing back after a 25 year abcince. Having been an air craft Mechnic I lost my hearing. On Feb 23rd 2012 I had an operation to restore it, and since June 23rd I have been able to hear all the wonderful sounds of nature, along with many other sounds not so wonderful...lol
I can't wait to get into the woods and hear all the sounds nature has to offer again!

Wow...Tsvoyager. That is really something. I am so very happy for you! Yes, you do need to get to the woods and listen closely to all the sounds you have missed out on and then you need to get to the Boundary Waters and hear the sounds of the loons again!! Congratulations- it truly is amazing what doctors can do now isn't it?

sparky1....have you got any hearing? I wonder if this would help you too. I hope Tsvoyager gets back here and lets you know what the operation was!

Saturday night at the cabin ALL night long there was one frog, bird, chipmunk???? or something that made a peep noise constantly till morning. I have never heard it before. Also this morning I heard a toad or frog that sounded just like those at home! Maybe our "pond" will become their new playground!!!

Yes, we were sitting out last night and tree frogs were chripping. I see it's going to get to 90 deg. here by Thrursday here. I thought we were done with that. I'm hoping to get to our cabin next weekend.

Here comes the heat again...90's for next 3 days. Yuck!

We have a dozen turkeys that walk through our front lawn each day around the same time. Today when I saw them I called to my 9 year old to look out her bedroom window. She was playing with her 3 year old niece. I may have been better off keeping my mouth shut because before I knew it an argument had broken out when Morgan declared "Oh chickens!!" and Laura said "No, those are turkeys." Well Morgan doesn't like to be wrong and neither does Laura....ahhhhh jeez....it reminds me of the time Morgan saw a deer in the front yard and was convinced it was a horse...meanwhile Laura tried to teach her it was a deer. These animal species can be so confusing but I know how Laura felt because the other day a muskrat waddled through our yard. Laura was so excited she yells out "Look! A beaver!!!" sigh...not quite honey

Ha ha ha...Mr. Troll just reminded me of another time they argued...Morgan "Oh, a bunny!!!!"
Laura "No, it's a rabbit!!!" both so determined to be right this went on for some time before Laura realized "oops...we are both right!"

haha. It seems the turkeys are on the move. We saw a couple dozen this last weekend near out place, I haven't seen many all summer up until now.

Oddly enough...we have that same issue with a bird like call just as the sun sets and the forest around us turns dark. It happens almost every time we're up there. It isn't just a peep or chirp, it has different tones and is about a three second musical call? None of us know squat about birds, but this certainly sounds like a bird call of some type. Odd that it would occur for the first 30 minutes or so of evening though...

We've got a ton of frogs and toads, but every now and then we hear a bleeping sound that is twice as loud and intermittent. It certainly doesn't sound like any of the frogs/toads making a racket. I wonder what that is? Bambi maybe?
