I planted two apple tree's on the ranch today. The ground is fairly wet now and I did water the hole when planted. Where I planted these tree's they are on there own becuase I can't water them like they should be to get them started. Ok the question is if I took a 5 gallan plastic bucket and drilled a 3/16 hole in the bottem and set the bucket right by the tree would it drain slowly and keep enough moisture in the ground for the tree. I would think it would be a slow process for 5 gallons to drip out of a 3/16 hole tight to the ground. What do you think????????????????

Just That would be awesome!!! I don't have any pails but I could find some or I would try it. I can't imagine it not working. I was thinking of placing a brick in the bottom so the wind couldn't blow it away also. You are right it may need like a 1/8 inch hole. Thanks Just for your help!!! I did place thses tree's in a natural drainage so if it rains they should get a better drink then just the rain that comes down.

Just a Idea. 5 gallon bucket-pass a string (wick) thru (tini Hole)---some in bucket-some in the ground @ tree---cover the dirt B&W paper,,,dirt on top of paper, to retain Moisture.. fill bucket-maybe lid laying on top-Keep the animals & birds out of it. just a idea. sparky1 in s.va.

I am working on that now .put a nylon string in the 1/16 in. hole,, filled the bucket at 8 last night . the water was 1/2 gone this morning..this is not good as neb wants the water to last a week.I had a hard time getting the string in the 1/16 in hole not sure how to get it in a smaller hole. What I have learned is to make the hole on the very edge of the bucket to keep the water close to the trunk of the tree !! It might also be a good idea to make the hole on the side of the bucket say up 1/4 in. from the bottom to keep any dirt from plugging the hole >>

I would just buy a battery powered water timer from ebay or amazon. Get a 50 gallon water container, connect the timer and the problem is gone for a month.

Just Thanks for all the effort you have put into the project. I just got a bucket and plan on trying it till I read your posts. You are right about the edge and have hole by trunk of tree. I will mess around and see what I can come up with.

I did exactly that last year with three new maple trees I planted. I drilled a small hole in the bottom side of a gallon plastic bucket and placed it next to the small trees. I filled it about twice a week moving it between trees. As long as new trees get the ground nice and damp around the roots several times a week they should do fine.. Too much water is not good either as it will drown the small roots. You might google how many gallons of water per week for new planted trees and see what you get, I don't think its a huge amount as long as the ground is well soaked.
