sorry I have no picture, last spring when on a nature hike (ONT) I heard a very weird noise (animal like) the only way to explain it was that it at first sounded like a kitten crying! I used to work at an animal shelter so I thought alright it could be out in the middle of our property, then as I listened some more I thought it could be a little bleating from a fawn, I looked all around in the scrubby bush, but I realized the sound was moving close by but moving higher up. After a while of searching and I'm certain looking like a complete idiot, I realized this HAS to be a bird it moved higher and got around too fast. For the life of me I couldn't stand still any longer straining my eyes, I couldn't see anything. After a very long while this whatever bird was nice enough to feel the need to follow me on my hike. "Crying like a baby ?" all the while of course out of site. I felt it was heckleing me!!! I have a really nice bird book with sounds and have yet to come accross the sound does anyone know what kind of bird this was? I don't know if it was territoral or just curious as to what I was?? I love birds but I definatly have yet to identify many new birds on my new property.

When I was a kid, and playing about 50 yds into the woods behind the house, I heard what sounded like a baby crying.
Told the folks.
They told me it was probably a cougar.
Next evening, about dusk, we saw a big cat drop from the rafters of the garage.
Not long after a neighbor put one down.
Not sayin' it's a cougar, but if they're in your terrain, and you were walking thru the trees or on the down side of a ridge, you might have been stalked.

wow thats scary! thank goodness your ok!! thankfully we don't have them in this part of Ontario, we have only had 2 reports of a black bear in the last 2 yrs, and a moose, but many have said someone had the moose and let it go for a joke. Its funny how just going 5 mins away you can find many animals you really never seen before, I'm 39 and a good 17yrs ago we saw a opposum and no one beleived us at the time, now we have lots around. We also just 2 yrs ago seen a porcupine for the first time, we also never knew they were around, my vet was the one that told me that dogs started coming in with quills in their face so I better watch my great dane! I was startled the other day by a large ferret looking animal, it turned out to be a mink, I had know idea. I'll take the smaller creatures thanks, I love cats but I'll stay with the little ones!! thanks for the response I'm all ears maybe someone can help me.

I don't know what you heard but you do -- and perhaps this is too obvious: Any chance it was a gray catbird?

I don't know if the sound works on this link but catbird calls and mimics vary widely.

Yup
Moved back to Oregon in the early '70s and saw a possum for the first time......thought it was the world's largest rat!
People said "naw, it's an opossum"
That's a long hike from the Mason Dixon Line, wonder when they started?

Wow what an oxymoron eh? catbird, mew sound wow no blonde moment there! ha! Thanks so much for the web site, I love birds, and haven't had my laptop too long I will use that site repeatedly. I've never actually seen the bird or anything like it!
Thanks now I won't be searching in vain with branches and leaves stuck in my hair for the little helpless critter!!

ya I thought rat too! they said they came in some box cars of trains, I can't be sure though. They really don't stand up to our winters here, we have one that shows up around 11 pm and his missing a great part of his tail and ears due to frost bite. I did however find they can run alot faster then they appear when I was showing my mom before she was going home I opened the patio door and it made my heart skip a few beats as it didn't wadle off like the skunks.

again great info thanks for responding!

No problem, Kelly. You are probably in the northern most part of their range but I figured that was probably it. When we go up to the place in the bush I do a bit of birding and I always have binocs with me when I fish. I get to see a lot of birds I cannot see back home. In 40 years of going up there I don't know if I have ever seen a catbird.

Possums - don't know if I have ever seen one up there either. Wild turkeys were reintroduced near my home and have thrived and I see they are doing well north of Toronto. That is great to see!

I'm about 2.5 hrs from Toronto and we do have turkeys that were introduced many years ago here too, they are doing very well. They love to wait till the last second and fly out from the tall grass when I'm walking along the creek its a little heart stopping! I showed my son the bird site he was thrilled he wants to make some sort of wildlife diary of what we can find on our property as we have our hikes. I think its a good idea, I'm already surprised of what we've come accross so far. 2 wks ago we all seen a snapping turtle while we were fishing, their certainly not rare but this one was huge!! Its tail was a good foot and a half long and thick. (I won't be swimming in that creek) I read they won't hurt you but... naaah I'll pass!

Does anyone know much about beavers.? We have some in different spots on the property but the most recent dam and lodge doesn't look so good after this winter, my son was questioning if I think it may have died. I really don't know much about them, I don't want to lie to him, are they just slow to fix their lodge and dam so early in the spring or did mother nature take its course?

I read they won't hurt you but

Some co-workers down south had trapped (what they called) a 'snappy' turtle.
Looked like it musta weighed 20 lbs (9 kg).
It just set in the cage, kinda sleepy lookin'.
I poked at with a stick several times...nuthin'
Then
SNAP!!!!
Broke the green stick right in two.
My Cajun buds got quite a kick outta how high I jumped.

Yeah, and sometimes it's ma nature washin' things out.
Lotsa beaver in my old stompin' grounds.
Folks there (Vernonia Oregon) think 'em a bit of a nuisance.
But they seem great for fish habitat, so they're my friends.
Inspected a lodge (in the 1st grade) when our teacher took us on a real field trip.....fascinating.

i hate to ask but what in the world would beaver tail soup or roast beaver taste like, not that I ever want some thanks. but still like to know I have some hunter friends it would be a great subject.??

Gary O

yes I was pleased to have them some spots of our creeks are quite shallow it was nice when one day we showed up and had a really deep area to fish, the deer couldn't jump across some spots anymore it was nice and wide. Thats why its sad he seems to have vanished, I just hope someone didn't trap him for no reason. Here its the national animal.
I was watching a show a few weeks ago and it said that beavers are known to be unisexed, males have ovaries! news to me, but they said they ran out of $ to look into it much further. interesting animal for sure.
