After spending the lion's share of the last two winters at the cabin... and freezing our feet on the cold wood floors. Probably burning far more firewood than we should have if we were well insulated, we are getting the floor insulated. After looking at all the options, talking to other cabin owners and insulation companies we have decided to have 3-4" of closed cell foam sprayed under the floors. We talked to 3 different companies, one could do it the end of November... yeah like you could drive up here then! The second made it pretty clear they didn't need the work... but would call back after they talked about it...THEY DID NOT! Oh I hate that! Horrible business practice even if you don't want to do the job, call and tell me! The third, after discussing the job on the phone... we have only about 18" crawlspace in one corner... most is well over 2' closer to 3'... said he could work in that space and (we were leaving then for AZ) to call him when we returned. I called him Monday and he came out today, Wednesday to look at it and give me a quote. No problem and he will shoot 3-4" under our floors on a 22'x26' cabin for $1,100. We are stoked! The other, November guy, was talking ~$1,800.
Warm floors this winter!

Nice price! I looked at the DIY kits they sell and they were not cheap.

Jsahara... Wow! That's roughly 3 times the size of our place but twice the price per sqft!
I looked into the DIY kits but it would have cost about $2,200 for just the kits. The more I thought about it the less confident I was about doing it DIY . Now after getting the quote I'm glad I got a quote!

We are in southern Colorado, San Luis Valley, except we are in the mountains high above the valley. There are at least 5 spray foam contractors in the area, that probably drives the price down.
I think I better check with the contractor.... I was asking for closed cell foam, but wondering if he quoted me for open cell. Hmmm...
Edit: Just talked to the contractor... Closed Cell Foam!

I used the self use kits, two of them for my floor. My cabin is on piers and the lowest point is about 2 feet. It was so messy, I had one of those tyvek suits, respirator and hood. Still got it all over me. That stuff took weeks to come off.
However, it was worth it. The floor now sounds like a solid floor and it's never cold.
Spray foam is perfect for this. It adds a vapor barrier, insulation, rigidity, and racking strength.
If my place was not so hard to get to, I would hire a professional to finish the walls and ceilings as it was just to messey with a kit at that altitude. I found the foam was coming out too fast and spraying back. I had to almost barely pull the trigger to get it to spray right. I'm sure a professional could regulate it down to do a good job.
