We have been using a homebrew composting toilet for about two years. I say composting but we don't actually compost but dump it every few days. We do our business then cover with peat moss and that has served us well. I recently put a urine diverter in it and now after about 3 days the "pile" is crawling with maggots! Needless to say the wife is not one bit amused as apparently the urine must have been keeping the maggots from hatching. Of course it's my fault for putting in the diverter, which she did not ask for, but I digress. The toilet is in an outbuilding which is impossible to keep fly-free as in the summer the door must be left open to keep from taking bathroom breaks in a sauna!

Is there anything I can spray into the bucket between dumpings that will keep these nasty critters from taking over?

Thanks...

Justin B.

Get your toilet lid to seal better.

We have the cheap crappy luggable loo bucket seat (I hate that thing) but it dosnt let bugs in. I dont even dump it between trips. We use wood shavings.

I don’t think it was the urine diversion that was the issue. Just happened at the same time. Either there were eggs already in your peat moss or there is access for flies in your system. Seal it up as said above

Use wood chips instead of pest moss. Sprinkle with some bokashi, done. Bokashi breaks everything down. Every cabin should have it.
