US Scouting Service web page has a neat set of basic instructions to build a hot water heater that uses bar-b-que charcoal.
Not sure about a link, just google charcoal hot water. Also, in our search for a sailboat, we came across a boat that had a small heater that ran on charcoal briquets. Needless to say, it drew ALL air from outside, and VENTED ALL gasses to the outside as well. You can kill yourself otherwise, but there is a heater that should burn for many hours with an easily accessable and stable fuel source.
