I use my well pump to fill my water tank using a 220v genny that I just turn off when full. So the pump is never unimpeded. Can I hook up a garden hose to the pump with a nozzle I can shut off while the genny stays going to wash stuff? I'm pretty sure pumps are made to do this, just want to make sure. It's a Gould submersible down in the well.

I'm not so sure you can do that... Assuming this is a submersible pump, without a pressure switch to shut off the well pump, it will just keep pumping (or attempting to pump) away. I think if you shut off the hose, pressure will continue to build until something lets loose...

Thanks Jeff. After further reading I think you are correct. I need to plumb a pressure switch and connect it to my control box, I think..

If you included a pressure tank in your system , with an air cushion. your pressure switch, would shut the pump off at the desired pressure. You could then run a hose or continue to fill your supply tank. old243

You will need a pressure switch and pressure tank. Unless you het a big tank you will still not have alot of flow for very long.
