Manual i would say a fiskars splitting axe. You can split hardwood with out even standing it up. Manual spitters its all about the head shape.

I would second the fiskars splitting axes. Lightweight and space-age design. Easily out does my splitting mauls that previously I used for years. Trick of these axes is to keep edge razor sharp. But basically they a one chop, one split.
I did upgrade to a White gas engine log splitter. Found one at family farm under tarp. Father in law passed away and he sold farm equipment. Cleaning out barns and lookie here. Wonderful machine Even Ironwood doesn't stall it.

We have a Northern Tool 5 ton hydraulic and so far have split quite a pile with it with no problems. Specs said up to 10" pieces but we routinely split pieces well over that. Now, neighbor has a Troy Bilt that I would call kinetic. It is really great and very fast.

I scored a Boss 7 ton electric splitter on Craigslist for $120... had to drive 3 hours to pick it up but hey from where our cabin is, it's over an hour to the nearest town anyway.
I had doubts about it but I am throughly pleased with it. I run it with my Predator 3500 inverter/generator with no problem.
I'm a one armed guy so this thing is saving my remaining arm big time! I put the round on the rail then use my foot to push the lever down while guiding the round with my hand. Works great!
