What do you use, especially off-grid?
Currently I have an omni ground plane antenna for 2 meters that I temporarily suspend from a tree branch up high. If leaves are down or leaves aren't wet, I can hit a repeater about 40 miles away, which I think is prettty good (I'm in hill country but not quite on top of my hill). A neighbor gave me a 40' tower I hope to set up with a manually turned yagi antenna.
I have a random-wire (about 120') that I'm using for my 1954 vintage Zenith Transoceanic radio (battery powered). Great reception! Last cabin visit I listened to Vietnam, Slovakia, Argentina and some other broadcasts in English, and one in French.
I plan to attach a d.i.y. antenna tuner to randomwire and try with my 5 watt 40/80 meter transceiver.

I have a 2m / 440 vertical up about 30 feet, allows me to hit 3 local repeaters. I acquired 4 fiberglass light poles 35' tall this summer. I'm hoping to use the post hole digger on the tractor this spring and set them. I want to put up a 160 meter sky loop not to far from the cabin into it with ladder line to a manual tuner.

For 2 meters, my HT is fine, I have a repeater at 6000 feet about 2 miles as a crow flies from my cabin. For HF, I have a G5RV (6 to 80 meters). The ropes are left in the trees, I just hoist it up when there, take it down when done.
I do have a 2 meter 50 watt mobile and a 1/4 wave Tram antenna set up in my Kawasaki Mule, I will ID with it giving my call "in the Double J Mobile" rear_view.jpg
