Hi there! I bought 8 6V 200amp hr Costco deep cycle batteries 2 months ago, and need to buy 8 more. They have been hooked up to be a 12V battery bank and charged via a 40amp solar charge controller hooked up to 2 x 250watt panels. I hooked it up to get started and learn about solar, so I've only actually used the batteries maybe 4 times in the last two months. I want to move to a 48v system. My main question is what type of battery do you recommend I buy and would it be ok to combine my original 8 batteries with the 8 new ones? Please say yes.  Worried that even adding batteries even after 1 day of use removes the ability to combine batteries of different ages? How strict is the battery combining requirement they are the same age? Thanks in advance!

It’s not ideal but sounds like yours are new enough that it won’t be a problem. I’d do it. That being said that sounds like an awfully big battery bank compared to your solar. Do you really need that much capacity?

Thanks FishHog! I have 14 more 270watt panels I'm going to set up soon. Roughly a 4k system. I need lots of juice to run two well pumps (one in the well one in a storage tank) that are 1/2 horsepower pumps pulling 3000 watts on startup and 240volt. I'm also trying to source a good inverter for this setup. Researching AIMS, MagnaSine and Schnieder and would love any advice on that front.

Ok that makes sense now. I’ve been researching inverters although smaller for my camper van and am heavily leaning towards the aims but I don’t think you will go wrong with any of those

2 strings of 48 volts batteries will be much better than 4 strings of 12 volts batteries. And, two months won't be much of an issue.

We have a Magnasine inverter (4kW) at our cabin. 5 summers full-time there and it has worked flawlessly. I run most everything I need from it - water pump, table saw, washing machine, and even the occasional light bulb! Just a data point for you.
