I took the plunge and got a Premier BAK100OP propane stove via Menards. Had to wait a month or so for it to arrive at store (!) This range uses a battery pack to ignite the gas, could also light with match. I avoided the glow bar 120volt version for my off-grid application.

Four burners on top. Oven has two removeable racks, I think we can cook a turkey! Separate broiler good for toast, etc.

Range is only 20" wide, 24" deep, standard stove height.

Running it off 2 grill type tanks 'cause they were handy. Works ok in our Ohio climate, others might need bigger tanks with larger freeze-resistant passages. I'm using dual line rv regulator that will automatically switch tanks when one empties.

This will replace my 2 burner kerosene range which may go in future guest cabin...

Now my kids can put on my coffee in the morning!

Curious what you paid for it. Every time I've looked at these, they seem insanely expensive compared to the same stove with a 120V connection. I don't understand why the battery sparker adds so much more to the cost.

Current price at Menards.com is $487 USD, I think I paid $50 less. The 120 volt version needs a lot more power for the glow bar, a bit of a power hog for my minimalist solar.

Looks good SE! You can do alot of cooking on a 20lb tank. I have a standard range that I bought cheap locally and then converted to propane. Downside is I have to manually light with it. I recently added a direct vent heater, so I may upsize to a 100lb tank in the future.

Nice! Curious to hear what you think about it down the road.

Interested in how the oven holds temp (if you use it.)

Have made frozen pizza, venison roasts and turkey in mine. Holds temp as well as any other oven. When burner goes off, pilot stays lit. When temp drops, burner lights back up and so on. Batteries are over a year old without replacement. Can also light with a match if batteries die. Propane use seems minimal.

We have an older one that is propane. It's a white Westinghouse. It's probably close to 20 years old now. I use 100 pound tanks for the cabin which feeds everything. They last a long time. The stove and oven work great and hold the temperature very well. We have cooked many a turkey dinner in ours. This past year I had to replace the thermocouple but that has been the only issue. I think you will be very happy with it and enjoy many years of cooking! Congratulations!

I have one at home, 120v version. Works as any other stove would, no issues. What I love about this unit is the broiler is in the bottom, makes finishing pizza and things like garlic bread amazing.

Was replacing a 21 inch electric didn’t have many options. I’m in Ontario and wanted to reduce my hydro bill so went with NG. I paid around $600 in Ottawa.

There really is nothing like cooking with gas.

We bought a used NG stove off craigslist and converted it to LP. some models have the conversion kit included. we paid $50 for the stove with kit and 20min work and you have a full sized LP stove and oven.

video of the process if interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHNt5MzaZ-0

We just got our Premier 30" range last weekend, haven't used it yet, but it seems to have great reviews....
I used to only be able to find these for big $$ too (mostly shipping cost) but I found them online at Home Depot for about $500 - free shipping to your store or about $50 shipped to your home.......

We have had the 30" Premier range for the past 5 years and it works great. It came set up for NG but had instructions and parts for LP conversion. We use a wall plug from our solar and the burners turn on instantly with a spark. The oven spark lights the pilot light and it takes less than a minute for the gas to start flowing to provide the oven heat. Works great. Shipping was half the price again of the stove price from Nevada.

sorry for the delay, but no issues at all. Nobody asked, we just said "stove" didn't offer any additional info, but don't expect the border people are up on that stuff anyway. I'm in mooretown by the way. Cottage is in Sudbury.

It all depends on the border agent you talk to when you cross over. You are supposed to pay duty on any new appliances.
I did the research and found that if I bought a propane stove and refrigerater across from the US into Canada the duty would be $635 ca.

Why not just buy it in Canada? I looked at the Canadian distributors list for Premier gas ranges and they have several locations in Canada, including Ontario.

MISSISSAUGA

Mississauga, ON L5S 1Y6
Tel: 905-565-5386
Fax: 905-564-8157

Most manufacturing companies in the US have at least one distributor in Canada.

Bushbunkie: In looking for propane stove I found that the Premier seemed to be the best one on the market. If, as Silverwaterlady reports, the duty to bring the stove into Canada from the US is $635 (does that include shipping?) and the cost to buy the stove IN Canada is $850 dollars it still seems to be a great deal.

The only way to get around this is to find a stove built in Canada that has the same features and quality as the Premier and I don't think you will.

so its $449 USD

at say 30% exchange this is $583.70 CAD, and most likely you will be made to pay the taxes at the border. GST of 13%, so your up to $659.58, unless you get real lucky at the border and get waved through.

Don't forget the $8 bridge tolls. Still a savings over the $850 plus GST so $960.00 in Canada.

The high exchange rate makes it less attractive than it used to be, but I'd still do it for the $300 in my pocket.

Hmmm.... I paid $849 CAD for a Unique Classic 24" offgrid propane stove. Battery Ignition, simple to use, easy to clean and different BTU top burners to keep gas use simple. Yeah, there was the cursed HST on it too Not complaining though, very nice stove.

Unique Classic 24" LPG Stove

REF: for comparison purposes - NOTE seen them on sale scratch & dent etc for $500.

Here is a break down of the prices I'm looking at in the US from Menards.
Unique off grid propane 30" white range $1269.00
Unique off grid propane 13.4 white refrigerater $2,319.
Total of $3,588.00, save 2% by using Menards credit card -$71.76, add 6% sales tax $3,727.21, add NAFTA at border of $612.43 equals $4,339.64.
Than I need to hire someone to hook them up nice and legal because I don't want to invalidate my homeowners. They are going to have to drill through my logs. Really don't have a way to get the big appliances up there anyway so I'm just going to need to order them in Canada so they will have to move them.
I looked into getting small propane appliances but due to the fact that I like to bake and will only be shopping for fresh food once per month, I needed a upgrade in sizes.
I have a price list of these appliances from the location I need to order them in Canada. I've misplaced it. I'll update this when I find it.
This is I've known for years is going to be a big expense but the time has come for it since we've both retired and can finally spend more time at the cabin.

Hey Steve. I've been thinking about getting the Unique 24" also. So you are happy with it? Reviews are sparse, but I did see a couple of posts of people that had problems with them. The reviews were older though. I have a Unique fridge that came with my cabin and is seems pretty solid to me.

Costco has an Off-Grid Applicance section with Unique applicances: https://www.costco.ca/off-grid-appliances.html

It's a beautiful and highly functional stove and no issues... Very Solidly built and very good finishing. Now that being said, it's NOT like my former Caloric Professional cookstove which I had for years... but a similar model is now in the 4 grand range, so not going there. Besides, just me now and Maggie when she's up, so no need for a big pro cooker, I just don't cook much anymore really.

I am new to this site but saw this and had to chime in. Ive been off grid for 30 years. When I moved to my current place 13 years ago I bought a brand new Galaxy gas stove from Sears. It is a pilot light model because I DONT like ANY electronic gobledeegook on my stove. It has worked flawlessly in every way. They no longer make these that I can find. I am going to build a cabin on my place and I will get a similar stove. This one has to stay as my Daughter needs it. I only paid 239$ for this stove.

You could buy a much better electric fridge and pay for half of your solar system with that money. Propane fridge really doesn't make sense unless you're in a moving vehicle.

I bought a regular GE 30" 5 burner gas stove for 300 off kijiji. Its like brand new. I did have to do some minor repairs and convert from ng to propane. Total cost was under 400.

There's always another way. Of course.

In the summer I use an induction cooktop. With the solar system. Keeps the house cooler too.

You can get a Danby Designer chest freezer from Home depot Canada for $399 and convert it into a fridge.

https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.90-cu-feet-chest-freezer.1001071170.html

https://www.amazon.com/Johnson-Controls-A19AAT-2C-Temperature-Controller/dp/B0002EAL5 8

The advantage to a chest fridge is that all the cool air doesn't spill out onto the floor whenever the door is open and the "conversion tool" allows you to save a lot more electricity running the appliance as a fridge rather than as a freezer.

If you put an extra surface on top of the lid of the freezer/fridge you can also use it for more counter/prep space.

Silverwaterlady: Have you priced out the ongoing cost of buying propane for your fridge? Because that expense will go on and on and on.......
