I just read an article on used solar panels... The article claims that as long as there is no physical damage, and they are tested in working order (check via multimeter) that used solar panels are a great bargain.

Curious on what folks think. There are some excellent quality panels local 265w for less than half the price. I was thinking about picking up a couple to begin putting together a small system. Any comments?

Thanks

If the output can be proved, I think that's worth it!

There should be no problem as long as they test out fine & to spec, any visible damage to the cells and framing should be an indicator to look at the next one, also look at the back to ensure no scratches or damage. Mounting points of course will be marked up a bit.

Get the Make & Model (series too) and get the doc's online. I think pretty much every company has their materials available on line, even for older panels. 265 Watt Panels are not that old, I believe < 7 years or so, I may be wrong. You also want to make sure that they are same voltage, amps etc...

If at a later point you want to add more panels, say 350w, you could put those in a separate bank wired to their own breaker, just ensure your controller can support it, the darn controllers like the Midnite Solar & other top quality ones aren't cheap BUT you do get what you pay for.

FYI 400-425 watt panels are hitting the market now and 500w+ are expected soon, there is a shift coming, so panels (current generation & previous) will further drop significantly.

I bought used when I installed. Saved about $4/w at the time. they were two year old panels out of a "microfit" system. The panels were from China and weren't acceptable for the local tax rebate program. The buyers error was my good fortune.

Seven years later they're still performing above the listed rating.
