The past few summers I have a month where it gets really hot but not enough solar capacity to run a conventional AC unit so I plotted and planned and have come up with a low energy solution.
About 6 feet down in the soil the temperature stays around 55 degrees so am going to dig hole ten feet deep by 20 foot long, and ten foot wide, install a wooden ground contact vault 2 foot by 10 foot by 20 foot long, install input and output pipes to the cabin and re cover with dirt and vegetation.
This will bring constant flow of cool air into the cabin via a 5 inch USB powered fan.
In hindsite, I should have done this under the cabin before building....too late now.

Wouldn't it also bring in odors as well as the possibility of introducing mustiness and mold?
I do like the idea, though. I dug a 4 foot deep pit for an outhouse relocation in the middle of August at my camp and it was as cold as a refrigerator down there. I had to keep popping out of the hole just to warm up.

In dry climates it works well, similar in effect to using swamp coolers. However in humid climates it just raises the humidity and defeats the purpose( effectively raises sensation of hotness for lack of a better term. Let alone the added issues of increased humidity, mustiness, mold, rust, rot............etc.

Ditto on swamp cooler effect. If you have enough solar to run a conventional fan, simply putting a bowl of ice on a table or something in front of the blowing fan will add and distribute cooling.
