Once in a while high winds were blowing smoke down my 5" pipe stack and into the woodstove, even when burning at full bore. What a drag, smoke everywhere inside! Only thing that helped was to crack a window on the windy side to pressurize the interior a bit, but that was always after the stinky fact. Then I found on a British site a very expensive German made chimney topper device. To my surprise it's on ebay right now, item #150400326794, or search for windkat on ebay. I got one for $99 and about $40 shipping. The 150mm size fits 5" single wall black steel and double wall insulated wood stove pipes. It was about $300 and shipping from europe, too much for me! I cut the flange base on the ebay model into 4 straps to bend down and screw to my existing pipe, inserted a short piece of single wall 5" black steel pipe for an adapter, siliconed it onto my pipe stack and bingo! Much, much better! I'm waiting for those worst case winds as the final test, but it looks good right now, definitely much better. Only problem, the stainless exterior was so shiny I had a neighbor sand blast it for a matte finish. The mfg site for this device is not very helpful: www.windkat.com. Best, Todd F.

is your chimney tall enough above your roof...should be 2 feet higher than anything with in a 10 foot radius...code spec.

when I added on my house back in 01 we finished just before christmas...I did not get to extend the chimney then...that winter when ever it was windy ...which was a lot it would back draft...after the pipe was extended ...no problems...except for the rare 90 to 100mph bursts we get in the winter some time.

Also play with the damper and combustion air. Sometimes there is nothing else to do but get a swivel cap.
