I have been reading all the great info on this site and it is great to see all of the input.
I want to run both solar and a generator off the same wiring system/panel. It will be two runs of wire each running off a 15amp breaker. Each will have a few lights and a few recepticles. I know there are panel switches to prevent power from both sources being on a the same time.
In the first stage I will supply the cabin by the generator through an inlet box from the generator.(generator, cord, inlet box, panel).
Is it possible to later add solar from a similar cord from the inverter?(inverter to cord to inlet box to panel).
Since there is only one inlet box it would impossible to have both sources powering the panel at the same time.

yes, a lot of people do this. Simply unplug from the generator, and plug into your inverter. I only use my generator to charge my batteries, or run my window air conditioner.

transfer switch two inputs and one output so the inputs are always separated OR if you buy an inverter charger unit the better ones have an automatic transfer built into them.

I have a 5000watt generator and would only use it when more power was required. What is the best way to charge the batteries while the generator is on. I can place a recepticle near the batteries but what do I need to make this work?
Thanks

an appropriate battery charger for your battery banks size and voltage. I highly recommend the Iota chargers. You typically want around a 10% charge rate, so if your battery bank is 150ah at 12V, you would want a 15 amp, 12 volt charger. I would lean towards a little bigger of a charger over a smaller one, topping off distilled water is easy if using FLA.
