New stove question: can I use a new Amana stove with electric power (just for elec ignition, no clock) and somehow change the ignition to battery? Or will these new stoves simply not work off-grid. I will have solar within a year, but I would like to use it now, it is a brand new, free to me, unit and I would hate to turn it down.

The big problem with most gas ranges that have electronic ignition is the oven. Stove top burners can always be lit with a match or other flame. You can even power the ignition via an inverter most of the time.

Most ovens in those ranges use a "burner bar" in the oven. Basically it is an electrically heated bar that is AC powered and must have AC all the time the oven is on. They are not off grid friendly.

For sucessful off grid use you need either a cheap range with pilot lights for the burners and oven, or you need a more rare and more expensive range designed specially for off grid use, like some by Unique and Peerless premier.

Thanks Don. Really I just want the top burners, oven will be rarely used. So I can just light the top burners with a lighter, like the old days? Or cut the cord and use a solar feed for the igniter?

For future use with solar, do the burnerbars draw a lot of amps?

Not sure about that. No idea if they need AC, as they "buzz" ...

The GE I am familiar with draws 425 watts every minute the oven control is turned to on. Not just every minute the gas is on and burning, but every minute the oven control is turned to ON and not off. That's a lot of power to warm up the oven and then bake/roast dinner or whatever.

What would the donor think if you sold it and put the money into one of the ranges that are off grid friendly?

I have 24" Hotpoint that requires no electricity for either the top or oven.

I bought a new Peerless 30" range and was able to have delivered before 2011. I bought it from Ben's Discount in Nevada and had it shipped. I talked to a lot of people about this issue as we have NO electricity. Everything is designed for electronic ignition but since we bought when we did, it was still possible to light the burners and the oven manually. Apparently, after 2010, all gas ovens must have the electronic ignition for lighting so if the power goes out, you cannot use the stove. A safety feature I guess. When lighting the oven, you must hold a match over the pilotl light to start it and then the oven will work. Takes a little messing around but works well. I was supposed to get an LG version but it came as NG. Luckily, it had a conversion kit.

My rv has 3 top burners and an oven and does not use any electricity. Twist a knob to activate sparker. Im sure there must be some used ones out there.

I bought a propane oven last year from Home Depot. No electricity needed. Works great. I think it was about 325 at the time.
