Merry Christmas all !! I've been looking on eBay and there is a tankless hot water heater ( propane ) that uses a small battery to ignite it . It is made by Marey and they have 3 different models , has anyone heard or has any experience with this company ?? Thanks and have a great new year !

No I haven't, but I've used a company called Ecosmart and their little model has worked great. Plus I recently installed a large model on a home in town, no feedback yet.

I've had a Marey brand tankless heater in my cabin for over a year now. I love it and consider it one of my favorite luxuries. I recently bought an Ecotemp as a backup and looks like a very similar unit to the Marey. I don't think you can go wrong with either brand. They both take 2 "D" batteries.
I'm not sure what you're pumping the water with, but make sure you get a pump that puts out enough pressure to activate the burner on the heater. I tried a couple of 12v centrifugal pumps (which didn't work), until I bought a Shurflo diaphragm-type pump. The thing seems indestructable, quiet, and gives plenty of pressure.

This is our source of hot water. It's for our outdoor shower. We put it on the cart so it is easy to move and we can take it home in the winter.

Thanks for the great feedback ! Marey has 3 models a 2 litre per minute a 3.1 litre per minute and a 4.5 litre per minute . I'm going to be totally off grid using 2 100 watt solar panels to run the lights the 12 volt pump and a little tv on rainy days for my daughter to watch movies . I'm hoping the 3.1 litre will be enough for showers and doing dishes ? Thanks again all and have a great new year !!

Bosch also has one with a manual pilot light that need no electric, I found one at Graingers.

The Bosch is kind of pricey ! The Marey heaters were anywhere from 180$ to 350$ .

How about the EZ tankless 101? Has a silly name but it is cheap and suppose to be good...
I found them for under 100$ online.

I'm off-grid for about 4 or 5 days a week. Hopefully going full-time by Spring. I run the pump off of a 12 volt battery, charged from my solar panels.

We only use it in the summer and the water is pumped from the lake into a 250 gallon holding tank on a water tower in the sun so the water is not very cold yet to cold for a nice shower. The heater is amazing. We use only about 1/4 a tank of propane in 3 weeks. Two showers a day for two people. The water can get hot enough to burn. It is preset so all we have to do is flick the switch.
It sure beats the 25 years I spent bathing in the cold lake every summer!

We use the Ecotemp L10 and have been for 4 years now. We have a 100gallon holidng tank in a crawl space and a 12 v Shurflo 2.8gpm pump. Works great and the water is hot. I ran hot water to my kitchen sink and a vanity sink in my shower area. I am very impressed with it. We even ran propane from my two 100lb propane tanks. I have only replaced the batteries once on it so far.

With any tankless water heater, remember that if you leave it where it will freeze the heating element may be damaged. Even if you drain it, enough water may remain to freeze and cause damage. Some units have freeze protection of different sorts, such as heater elements which require constant electricity, or drain plugs to drain the unit.
Note also that if you instal a mixing valve for a shower that it's hard to drain these to avoid freeze damage too. I plan to set up my piping system to drain for winter, but also with a connection to blow compressed air in the pipes to blow out the water heater and mixing valve, and any other water in the system. Seems like the only solution.

That is why we have it installed on a cart(we use it outdoors only). It's easy to take home and store in our heated basement.

We have the Ecotemp and it works great! It is so nice to be able to take a shower after a long day clearing the property.
Thanks for the advice on not leaving it out when freezing temps.
I did not know this, hopeful we drained enough water out of it that the heating element was not damaged. I will have to look into making it portable to store inside when we are not at the cabin.

That's a good idea,SilverWL.You could put it all on a cart or wagon.Tank of water,battery,pump,heater and propane tank.Just take the heater,pump and battery indoor's for the winter time.Drain the water tank and lines out on the cart,they can stay outdoors or in a barn or garage.

We have used an Ecotemp L5 for about three summers now. No problems. When is starts freezing at night I remove the drain when I'm done showering and when we are closing up for the season I take it down and store it in the cabin for the winter.

a good tip for tankless heaters , something I will be doing with mine soon.
Get a free standard tank type water heater (any size, any type (propane, natural gas.. whatever) : I say free, here I can find free ones all over the place craigslist and other local ads.
Take your input line and run it to the tank first, then from the out of the tank to your tankless.. This will do two things
One, it will leave sediment in the free tank you can replace anytime, two it will preheat the sometimes near freezing water to room temperature so that your tankless on demand is more effective in its temp rise, no need to attach the preheat tank to any energy source , it merely acts as room temp pre heat storage tank.
I suppose this is only helpful inside or on warmer days, I guess I should have read all the posts before replying

It might also help for me to let everyone know that we are only at our cabin in July and Aug. and take the tank home to our city house.
Since we're not retired and the cabin is to far away for weekend trips we're only up there on vacation.
Our son(lucky guy) lives only a few miles away from the cabin so he gets to enjoy it a lot more than we do.

If your worried about winter storage just run some pink RV anti freeze through the lines. No diff then when you winterize a boat, trailer, or RV.

Eccotemp is good and can heat water to scalding temperatures! I imported one from the states. i currently use it without a pump. My water is pumped out the well into a holding container (a 1000 liter recycled industrial orange juice container) and it gravity feeds to my eccotemp about 100 yards down a slight slope. Is enough pressure to keep it going although am looking at getting a little pump myself.
