Well, you'd start with installing a burner rail in the firebox, but I think by the time you had the conversion done, you could have bought a nice propane range. If you really want pursue this, though, it wouldn't be all that hard. All you are doing is substituting a propane fire for a wood burning fire.

If a burner was just placed in the firebox wouldn't that take a lot of heat to warm the cast iron enough to start cooking?

I did see (online) someplace a conversion that placed a burner under each lift out pot ring, or whatever the circular lift outs are called. In use the round cast iron thing was removed and the cooking was done on the burner like a regular propane stove.

Don, I'm sure that's possible, too.

As I tell my customers, "Nothing is impossible if given enough time and money to accomplish it."

it would.i just love wood cookstoves but actually right now-there is no room in our cabin for one.
thanks fella's.i am going to look for that link i saw and never knew it could be done-so the first thought hit me that i convert a wood cookstove into using propane.now i need to search on this a bit further.
it is actually more practical to just use wood out at our cabin cause theres so so much of it laying all over.thank u.

This man does it. http://stovehospital.com/ Not sure how long he will be restoring and converting wood stoves It isn't cheap that is for sure. From what I have seen on his site he does beautiful work! I would love to get one of his restored stoves. I may have to make a trip up and see his shop.

There are many types of Oil operated wood type stoves that were and still are used up east. Lots of them show up on ebay. Now an then I think that some of these also are found with a gas burner set up as well, but not so common as the oil.. which of course now days is expensive and somewhat more difficult to keep cleaned and running.
