one tip for the "pee" toilet. Put a straw bale in the hole. no more smell. works for the "boys" pee area if you have a lot of guests. we just pee onto the bale. and straw bales are 3 bucks here.

I use an old fashioned outhouse; except it has a vent, so it doesn't smell. Works great for my family of 7 (5 of which are female). It was the first structure I built (under orders that if not built, the family would not return). It's been going strong for 3 yrs with no issues.

Haven't read the whole thread, but one thing I considered before putting in a full septic was a simple vault toilet with a 55 gal plastic barrel. Bury it in the ground half way, build an outhouse around it and put a large vent pipe on it through the roof. This would only work for occasional use and probably wouldn't meet the wife test. And, eventually you'd have to dig it out. But it would positively contain the waste and with only occasional use last for years with zero maintenance.

We use a handicap or elderly toilet stand and a 5 gallon bucket and we do this inside the camp.. So long as you lid it after you never get a smell at all. But, the best part and IMHO this is most sanitary - we burn all of our poop.. Huge bonfires go hand and hand with our weekend romps at camp.. Once we have a good fire going and drain out most of the liquids - I dump the dumps right into the huge hot hot flames and coals and they are never to be seen or smelled again.. It works! No digging anymore holes!

Have looked at and tried seveal methods and am now going with human compost system. Will have one in the camp for those who don't like the great outdoors and then once finished there will be this open air one for me and all like minded who enjoy watching nature!

We have a bokashi toilet.....food scraps go in it too (even meat and bones.)
Works much better than sawdust in that the waste breaks down much faster.....costs about $25 to set one up.

we use a coleman chemical camping toilet. It ran about 70 bucks has a removable holding tank, you can take with you to empty at an rv park or as we do, just dig a hole before we leave then cover up. It has scent deoderizer tablets we never have a smell inside. we put a couple of gallons of water in the flush tank for a weekend. We spend probably 6 or 8 weekends a year so I don't know how effecient it would be for someone staying more frequently. We sure are happy with it as we don't have to go outside at night especially late in the winter

I looked up that bokashi toilet. that is cool. there's even a recipe for making your own bokashi out there.
essentially it's a humanure system with bacteria inoculated into bran or wood chips that you use to cover the deposits. the bacteria speed up decomposition and "pickle" the deposit.

I was fortunate enough to find an EcoJohn SR at a yard sale, brand new in the box with everything i needed to get going. I live in rural Alaska and a septic would have been way too costly and difficult for me to get in. I am a single lady and depend on myself. I didn't plan well when building and clearing my land. I have been thinking about getting an incinerating toilet with my next PFD check.
I got it hooked up and loved not having a "honey bucket" in my cabin any longer. The Ecojohn is attractive, quiet, no odors inside, and easy to use. I had some problems with the unit and was amazed at the one on one help I got from Tech Support at Globqal Inventive Industries, even though I didn't purchase it from them.
Stefan walked me through troubleshooting, patiently. When we figured out the problem they were quick to get the part to me I needed. So many places charge extra to ship to Alaska, when it costs them nothing more than to ship to Iowa. Shipping was fast and they charged me what it cost them, no added "handling" charges.
Now that it's running the way it's supposed to the toilet is a dream. After not having any indoor "plumbing" for almost 15 years, the EcoJohn SR is a dream come true for me.

I make solar powered waterless and odorless outhouses for a living, and one of the best tips I can offer to help keep your outdoor facility odorless, is to give your urine separator or urinal if you have one a few pump sprays of a biodegradable cleaner before and after each use. I use "Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day" with a rosemary scent which I got at True Value Hardware. This product is made in Minnesota.
If anyone has any questions about anything concerning outhouses I would be happy to try and answer. I embrace open source mentality. We are in this together.
