I have a question that I'd like for someone to give me some input on. A guy I work with has this wood stove that he wants to sell me for $20. I don't know that much about them other than we had a stove when I was a kid and I had to help cut firewood. This thing is old and rusted but if it's not rusted through is it worth having assuming I sand blast it and repaint it with some high temp paint? Or perhaps I should skip this and try to find something better. The price is right but I'm not sure about the quality. I've not gone to actually look at it. He sent me these pictures that he took with his phone.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Tell him if he gives you 20 you'll haul it off for him.

I was kinda hoping for something substantive.

From your pics, I would guess you'll spend as much getting that thing ready to use as you would if you just bought a new one of the same quality..... Not to mention all the time it'll take you to do the work. There may be more wrong than the rusted grate, questionably thin metal firebox, and lack of seals. However, if you want to restore a rather cheap looking old stove, I'd say, "go for it", but then, I ride old motorcycles that cost me as much/more than a new one by the time I get them ready to ride.

Thanks Martian. That was the kind of advice I was looking for. I'll pass on this one. Wasn't ready for that in the cabin just yet anyhow. It's still bare studs on the inside. Heat would be nice because winter is coming but one step at a time.

I completely agree with Martian. Unless you're after a nostalgic feel to your cabin stove I'd go for something newer and more efficient. That thing needs a serious sand blast and new grate which you may not be able to find anywhere.

I dont think it woud be worth fixing up to use as a sort of heat. but a good sanding and a coat of paint & i think it would be a nice piece just to sit in a corner, Mayby with an old pot sitting on top.

Thanks all for your input. I told him today that I wasn't interested. I like doing stuff myself but that may be a bit more than I need at the present time. Really appreciate the advice.
