hey all,
yet another water question.
i am using a 25 gallon rv water tank (inside) with rv pressure pump in my cabin mainly for cleaning dishes, hands, etc in sink not drinking. if i do need it for drinking, then i boil and run through britta filter.

my question is how do i maintain the water to prevent contamination. i add some bleach, but many report that it becomes inactive over time.

i have thought of pool chlorine powder but i am always adding 5-10 gallons of water from home (city water) so hard to calculate what volume needs treatment.

looking for advice from someone who has already solved this issue.

thanks to all for a great site and community

You use the pool shock to make bleach, then use the bleach to treat the water. Bleach has a shelf life of about 6 months but the pool shock is stable

This link has the information you need. Here is the EPA site that info came from.

Add enough bleach to treat the amount of water in the tank plus whatever you are adding if you've been gone for a while.

thanks just,
that answered my next question of how often do you need to retreat if water is sitting in the tank for some period of time.

How long do you leave it?

I lived in a motor home for a couple years and hauled water, but I was using it fairly regularly. I drank it, just bleached it maybe twice a year, then pumped it out and filled with fresh. I shock bleached it (like a pint or two in the tank), ran each fixture till it smelled of bleach, let it set a little bit, pumped it out, and refilled with fresh.

If it gets tasting funny, I bleach it. Glad to be on a well now tho.
