My wife and I just bought a small chunk of land in Central Washington with a small dry cabin for family recreation and hunting... we have a composting toilet and plan to bring our drinking water in, so that is covered for now. The next priority is water for washing up and showers. We are very fortunate to have a small creek with clean water close.
I plan to use a transfer pump (milwaukee cordless) to a water barrel and then run a 12 volt pump to the propane instant water heater for the shower.
The question is...
#1 I want to run a filter in the system and not sure if it should be before the 12volt pump or after the pump.

#2 which would be a good filter to use?

Nice place ya got there.

Alright, so, 12V pumps (AKA RV pumps) typically come with a strainer that attaches to the inlet side to keep larger debris from entering and damaging the pump. If the creek water is truly clean and you set up the transfer pump such that it doesn't suck up any debris into the barrel, then this alone is sufficient.

If you want to further filter the water, then any additional filters should be added after the 12V pump. Size of filter depends on what you want to filter out. If it's just any residual sediment, then you're looking at between 25 microns (most porous) and 1 micron (finest). As far as brand is concerned, Pentair Pentek has been around a while and makes good products. If you're using the water for washing hands and showering, this should be all you need. That said, there are filters and UV lights you can add in addition to further purify the water.

Welcome!
Sweet, tell more about the place.
We have offgrid, dry too. Rain barrel for utility water, no fancy filter system, haul in potable. Small scale LFP 12v battery/solar/psw 120vac inverter for electrics.
Our shower is a 3 gal bucket left in the sun or added to with hot water from the stove and a Coleman 4-D cell camping shower. We have never emptied the bucket with 2 showers and it beats a sponge bath. I think those on-demand shower units need like 20psi water pressure to open the check valve inside or the igniter wont work (saves them from melting down with no water running through).

Thanks for the responses guys! I want to purify the water because of the grandkids and they will likely end up swallowing some... pretty sure if I told them not to drink the shower water, the 5 year olds are going to drink a gallon each

I'll check on the psi required for the instant propane, that's a good point.

If you want to further purify the water, I'd start with a system like this - UV-250 System Complete 4.0 gpm Water Purification System 120vAC (Google it).
