Are 'pitcher' water filters, like the PUR, any good for part-time cabin living?
Specifically Im wondering about the life cycle of the filter units if not in steady use; ie, do they 'breed' bad things if only used a couple times a weekend and sit for a week?
We usually get a fresh jug of artesian water at a small community well on the way to, it is regularly monitored and tested as fit. We keep a rotation going in the 3gal ss tank, it becomes utility when we have fresh. Ive been thinking it might be good to have a filter pitcher just in case we ever needed to boil utility water, then run through the filter and be good to go.

What is it that you want to or need to filter out?

Ceramic candle stick filters do a prety good job. You can buy dulton filters direct and there cheaper than Berky.

This is going to be our new water filter setup. 2 $13 2.5gal stainless steel pots. Top one is "dirty"water, bottom one fills from the top one though the filters and has a water spigot on it. Including filters I have just under $90 into this setup.

The rain barrel water off the steel roof is my 1st thought, ICC. I have not had it tested. It is coarse filtered going into the barrel and I chlorine treat the barrel 1st of each month. If it came to it we would filter though a coffee filter, then boil, then run through the water filter. Btw, the water clarity in the barrel is excellent, see clear to the bottom, never any wigglers or algae.
Yours is pretty much what I have in mind, Brett, if I were to diy one. Where did you source the pots?
Thing is, I have a 4 pack of new, sealed pacs PUR Ultimate filters, each 'good for' 40gal. Id like to use em.

I'm a huge fan of these, use them all the time for backpacking:

Pots where just from Walmart, the cheap house brand ones.
I think these filters are good for 1,000gal each.
