I started pounding in the sandpoint well at the cabin. Got near 4-5' in. Then it hit the harder ground. The hill or kettle moraine that the cabin is on is mostly smaller 3-6" round rocks. Left from when the glaciers retreated.
I've been trying to come up with a way to finish pounding the 2" pipe another 15-20' down. Without having to rent a jack hammer at 85 bucks a day.
Here's my current idea, theory. Mount a 12v winch above the pipe from the ceiling. Make up a sacrifice hammer pipe. Well pipe is 2". I have a 2"- 1" bell reducer and a 12" pipe into that.
A 12" long x1" pipe that a 1-1/2" pipe can slide over to act as a guide. That is the well pipe end.
The hammer end would be a 12v winch from the ceiling that would pull the weight up probably 5-6'. Then put the winch in free spool and let the weight drop. Being guided by the larger pipe. The weight, i would have to have everything flown out so that has to factor in. I figured that I may as well bring out stuff that would be nice to have there. I have the corner bit off of a
D-8 blade. And the corner bit would make a good anvil. Also have a 12" piece of railroad track.
I figured that would be a good start and it's what I have.
So what do you all think ? Or if you've have other ideas or ways to upgrade what I'm thinking I would appreciate any suggestions. I'll post a picture of the current status. It's the 2" galvanized pipe.
Again thanks for any help

I don’t think a free spooling winch will be free enough to allow you a good hit. Need some kind of a disconnect

You cant pull the free spool knob/lever on winches while theres a load on it. Just to much load on the system to release.

5in rocks I wouldnt even attempt to drive a well. Even 3in in claybi wouldnt try.

The driven well at our place I think is a 2 1/2" pipe and the static water level is 25+ feet down (so a shallow well pump wont work). Ive had no luck finding an affordable pump for that small a pipe dia.
Other thing is, with a bright led light down the pipe I can see it takes a bend of to one side, and not just a little bend either. I figure it hit a good sized rock and skated off to the side (we are on sand and gravel/glacial moraine and an ancient asteroid crater). One Never knows what sized rock is down there.....
Got mine treated and capped for now, using rain-barrel for utility and bringing in potable whenever we go (3 gal. fresh in a Colman jug and 3 gal. left at cabin in a ss jug; so we always start with 6ish gal). Fortunately that works out just fine for the two of us, we never used more than a third of the 50ish gal of rain-barrel and IF we ran out of potable I can go fill the Coleman water jug at the neighbors.

I agree about the winch.. You won't be able to pull the release when its loaded.. It also won't free wheel enough for a good hit. A quick disconnect would be required.

As to weight.. Are there any good sized rocks around? Instead of flying in weight (expensive), you could find some locally.

The winch I have will free spool under a load. And it spins pretty freely. If I could figure out a better release it would be better. The winch would be slow too.
As far as weight. The hardened steel dozer bit would be handy to have as an anvil out there. Weight usually isn't a problem on the plane. Capacity for loading is limited.
As far as being able to pound the pipe in and rocks. Well it's a gamble, but I believe I can do it. Really nice to have potable running water in the kitchen. But heck building and maintaining a remote cabin is risky in itself. And the reward will be handsome if we get good water.
The pump I had claims a 25' lift capacity using a 1/2" water hose. Figured I could put a small section line on if it didn't work. There is also 12v submersible pumps that will fit down a 2" pipe.

Can those little dia. 12v pumps sub's can push 20+ feet up?
Got a link for what you have seen avail?
I know there are what is called 'sampling pumps' for well drillers to take samples. 12v, 2 stage, small dia. but they are expensive! The further down they have to go the more the gpm is reduced, and by quite a lot.
Though at a cabin if it takes a bit longer to get another gal or two of potable, so what. Just dont expect to take a shower, lol.

I thought I would post this here.. Its different that what you are doing, but maybe an option! I know it blew my mind when I found this video. Pretty much at tiny oil drill setup.

That's cool trav. I was at a yard sale a few years ago, there was a setup like that, not home made, with about 50' of extensions. Probably should have bought it.

Anyway, can you put something down the pipe you have in there now, with a point, to break up the rock that's in the way? Or drop some explosive..

Cathead (capstan) winch with manila rope. The winch motor just runs and you put a loop or two around the cathead. With no tension on the rope the cathead spins and the rope just stays stationary. Put some tension on the rope and it grabs the cathead and starts to pull. When whatever weight you have attached to the rope reaches full height, release the tension on the rope and the weight will drop. Put tension back on the rope again and repeat.

I don't know how many hours I've spent watching a driller do this to drive in a splitspoon to collect a soil sample for me to look at. Once you get the rhythm down, you can bang away quickly and with out much effort.

Why not try pounding in a different location to hopefully not hit a rock? You could beat the point down outside then pipe it back inside the cabin.
