Has anyone tried finding a toothed pulley that would fit the alternator and engine, which would allow use of a timing belt drive? No slipping there.

Maybe one could use a snowmobile variable speed pulley setup? If so it might make it easy to find the 'speed' that works.

A micro V-groove belt would work fine. I have seen them running 160A alternators on boats.

However, the whole solution is not great. You need the high RPM to get the AMPS out, but as the FLA batt approach Absorb the setup is still running at high RPM wasting fuel and making tons of noise. You could manually adjust it if you were watching an ammeter, but what a PIA.

That is the beauty of the inverter generator/charger approach. You leave the "econ" throttle on the generator set to on. As the batteries take less AMPS, the charger draws less and the generator adjusts the RPM.

Frugality sometimes sends you down a wrong path. In this case, I think its just worth the money to build a solution that works better. Its money well spent.
