Hey all,

My off grid tiny house has a underground water cistern and a small 10 gallon indoor tank. When we use the cabin in the winter we empty the tank and all lines before leaving...

I was wondering if I can add pool anti freeze instead?

We do not drink the water. We use it in our shower and kitchen sink so we do wash food with it. But we do not drink it.

Any thoughts?

I wouldnt. Cant you just drain the interior tank back into the underground cistern?

What kind/size of cistern do you haveoptimistic
? I'm brainstorming ideas on my own system... Everything I see on the market seems a little too big for my plans and requires a lot of machinery to get into place due to weight, size, backfill requirements.

I left a couple gallon jugs 3/4 full of water in a large plastic tub overwinter and we take a couple gal fresh when we go. The fresh lasts us 2 days and the second day the 2 frozen are pretty much thawed anyway if put by the heat right away.
I thought about sinking a 55ish gal pickle barrel as the in ground tank but the initial work and ongoing maintenance put me off.
We use a 3 season rain barrel catchment system c/w a feed-in filter which I dump when freeze up comes on. It gets a scrub out with a small brush-broom, flush, invert and store until spring.
Pretty easy all considered.

Norwesco sells tanks that can be empty and buried. The cheapest ones are the sphear style tanks and I believe about $2gal storage capacity.

I am very pleased with having gone to the trouble of installing the 325-gallon spherical tank at my cabin 10+ years ag0. I buried it with a manhole extension for access if necessary. That required building an insulated box at ground level. Plus I placed an buried "umbrella ring" of XPS foam pieces over the top area. It has never frozen, is always there with plenty of water waiting. I made my own water level indicator system; simple electronics powered momentarily by a 9-volt battery whenever I want to check the level.
