I got the shiplap up in the shed this past week. It's not the most fun 1 man job I have done. I have done T&G in the past on walls and ceilings with no problem. But the price for this shiplap was so cheap (.99 sq ft) that I thought I would try it. These are resaw 2x6 so they have a rough face on them and were a bite curvy. It was a no go on the ceiling- to hard to hold it and line it up and nail it at the same time. Going to just get enough T&G to do ceiling.

Commercially produced T&G is often done on a machine that is both a rip saw and a moulder. Put a 2x6 x 16 foot (example) in and it spits out a pair of 1x6 T&G boards. The mill probably has different cutter sets to produce different profiles such as shiplap or T&G without the vee joint. All in one pass with the machine pushing the lumber through. The moulder cuts the profiles and then it is rip sawn. Cool to see. $$$$ to buy.

That's the big question,lol
Yellow pine is a bit too yellow for me so I am looking for a stain with a bit of tint to it. Might have to do a custom mix like I did for out house.

OK. I asked because if you now stain it, and IF it shrinks a little, if it dries more, then there may be missing stain where stain did not penetrate or perhaps darker stain marks where stain did seep into but was not wiped off as it was hidden when applied.
I usually stain T&G and similar products before the pieces are installed in order to get everything that could be visible the same color. Personally I like the bare naked appearance and use a crystal clear finish like Minwax Polycrylic. There are other brands. Water-based, they are milky white in the can but dry absolutely clear. No yellow color like you get with oil based finishes.

This is our back porch at home that I did T&G on 3 years ago. It was stained with Cabot Australian Timber Oil after I put it up. I have never noticed any non-stained gap from summer to winter- But in North Carolina even our winters are humid ,lol

Yeah, in the SW it is dry and everything seems to shrink
