This is the year I am getting all the ducks in a row on the cabin I bought last late fall. (This site was been such a resource. Thanks all.) One thing that needed doing was a staining of the logs. They were down to bare wood, but not rotting yet. I power washed the whole cabin, let it dry a few weeks, and decided to use Sikkens Cetol Log cabin stain. When looking at the colors, I did not like the lighter colors, so I went with their Dark Oak. Now that I have the second coat on, the color is 1) super dark (as in like deep, deep brown, almost black) and 2) kind of shiny. I redid all the trim in a bright moss green, and it really pops, but I wonder if the cabin is now too dark. Did I just violate some unwritten rule of log cabinhood? Does anyone else have a shiny log cabin? A nearly black one?

I have seen a few log cabins that are a black-brown and I think they look handsome. I bet the green trim looks great next to it. Not sure about the shiny part, probably that will dull with time.

If you like the color, that is all that matters

I think that is the colors Forest Service and National Parks use, ie the dark brown logs and they use green for roofing. Its the reason I chose the same colors. Mine isnt logs, but if it was, I'd use the same color.

I second the request for pics! It actually sounds wonderful.
Dark brown & green can be a very sharp combo & - as toyota says - very NPS-ish.
I'm thinking especially of the wonderful Phantom Ranch on the floor of the Grand Canyon, designed by Mary Coulter & completed in 1922. Not logs but...(oops, having a hard time adding images, so here's a link)

More recently, this renovation & extension of a 100 yr old cabin in NorCal by architect Amy Alper. It's not a log structure either but it blends so well with the surroundings.

Don't re-stain it til we get to see, please!
