This free online window design tool will allow you to choose the best windows for your climate and solar orientation.

I had a bit of a glitch using their set up options on the second page. The selectors didn't allow me to change the orientation of the windows, their sizes or the type of shading used but if you just click to the next screen you can simply change the settings to what you want and then click "Modify Search".

This will give you specific recommendations for your particular cabin design. Then you can click on either "energy, comfort or condensation" to see the rankings of windows from best to worst and then "Manufacturers" to see the brands.

Great info, I am building a cabin in N.Ontario and was thinking of using the Farley windows that Homedepot
Canada sells. Really can't find much info on them, just wondering if any of you Canadian Builders had any experience with them ? Couldn't find them on this list ?
thanks !

Is there a calculator for what direction to face a house?

Do you mean is there a separate calculator to figure out the best orientation for a cabin in order to maximize solar gain? Usually you orient the house with the long access running east/west and try to keep it within 15 degrees of true south.

Of course. the best orientation is only really useful when the interior rooms are laid out to best utilize the sun during the day. Therefore, it's best to have kitchens on the east side, dining in the middle and living spaces or screen porches on the west side of a cabin since the sun will primarily be in those rooms when you are using them throughout the day (spaces like utility rooms, bathrooms and entries can be on the north side).
