I am thinking about using smart side paneling for a 12 by 16 cabin. I realize that the site builder used it but was wondering if others have used it and like it? Thanks Elliott

Max: if by smart panelling you mean what I call smartboard I can recommend it enthusiastically. This is the composite board replacement for T-111 of which I am speaking. I used it for a new shed build because the T-111 rotted out on the old one. The only cautionary advice would be that I used 3/8" and needed to move my studs to 12" vs 18" because there is some give. But it is very sturdy.
I hope this helps.

We used Hardi siding for our recent shed project. We have no fire dept. so I'm building for maximum fire resistance. We fully enclosed the outside with Hardi soffit, siding and trim. I found it pretty easy to work with. We used a drill to start the nail holes on the thicker trim and used a small punch to start the holes on the soffit and siding. It is hard enough that with a hammer the nail wanted to bounce. If you use a nailer you probably won't have the bounce problem.

We also followed the manufacture recommendation and used double studs at the siding joints. We were going to prefab the 4' wall segments and when we ended up building onsite we went ahead with the double studs. Our studs were 16" OC with 1/2 OSB over that followed by the Hardi siding.

I'll use it again on the next shed project this spring.

My 14'x20' shed has smart siding, and it is pretty good. Get ready for a lot of caulking where the boards meet (if you care about that kind of thing). One thing I don't care for is that if it comes into contact with the ground (moisture), there will be some swelling/expanding. I don't think it leads to rot or anything because it is a composite, but it definitely is one of those little annoyances. Overall, very pleased and I will most likely use it on my 'shabin'.

We had shed company build our "shabin" and they used smart panel. It is very tough. We cut into it last year when we added two windows and it was tough cutting through. Hard to believe as these pieces are pretty thin. We painted the outside with high quality glossy deck paint and no issues so far.
