Thanks in Advance...

I have a small timber frame with a 1/2 loft. I plan on torching the underside of pine T&G to lay on the loft (followed with plywood then finished floor). I'm curious as to the best finish/sealer to use. I'm concerned with...

1) oil finish leaking into the timber joists supporting the loft
2) cracking of poly with movement in the loft
3) want an matte or satin finish
4) don't want the boards to be ash/sooty to the touch or shed.

Thanks all, appreciate all input!

The burnt layer is usually expected to be the exterior finish layer but now people are doing it for interiors and furniture.

I would guess that the same finishing sealer that is used for furniture would be fine for an interior ceiling. You should probably seal the burnt side and let it dry before installing the floor.

That is going to be a dark cabin.

Usually what works best is...dark floors and light walls and ceilings.

If you want to avoid the soot factor you need to use a "hardening" finish. That's a finish that will dry to a hard coating.

Basically its Tung oil. I've used that, oh, three years ago? And the boards I used Tung oil on are still like newly burnt.

Other boards I tried other finishes. (soy oil is one. It worked okay but took about a month to harden) All of the boards I didn't finish with an oil I ended up rubbing down with wire wool. If you're patient and careful that comes out really really nice. You get a dark golden wood with black year lines. Pretty cool.

Although the pure soft black of the tongue oil is also really nice.

Good luck.
