We will be 'building' an area to sit out by in the evenings and enjoy the desert. We kinda have a design, but as I like to do, I'm asking for advice from you guys since it's always good. And unique. Pictures are welcome.
Here's what we have so far...I got a 36" piece of gas pipe from a buddy so it's thick metal, about 18 in high....its really cool and unique looking and will make a great centerpiece. I also built some funky looking (on purpose) chairs/bench/table out of pallets. We were planning on using some octagonal pavers we have at our regular house and maybe painting them....?
One question: would you put the fire ring directly on the desert sand and arrange pavers around it? Or put pavers down first and set ring on top of them (less cutting this way)
The intended look is western, rustic, country....

I like to have the fire pit ring up off the ground a little so that the air can flow under it. As far as decorative, I will be following this as well as we need to do something with ours to make it decorative. Right now ours is just a big truck rim.

Well, I like the USFS and NP stuff, but that is my theme. I already got their BBQ grille on the stand, and next will be a few fire pits.
Here it is, on sale for $114 and shipping is free. Tough to beat and comes with the grille that flips up.

Found a couple on amazon that have an outdoor theme and could be set on sand or pavers. I think they both come with a cooking grate and a poker. Landman brand. I didn't read the reviews but thought they had a good look. The Bear one is $135 bucks, and they deer one is $100 bucks.

I'd think about making the fireplace out of pavers or similar blocks. Arrange them in a ring and skip every other or third one near the bottom to let air in.

Pavers suck for a fire ring. They will crack and crumble from the heat in a few years. Especially if you don't line them with a steel ring.

I made my fire pit from rocks I collected. It is a 2 stage design: a ring of rocks about 5 feet in diameter for burning brush and scrap wood with a smaller fire pit for cooking and small fires. It works really well. The secret is good air supply. A nice flat rock is a nice touch for putting stuff on.

Here's a better one. I have a reflector oven from my canoeing days and it works great in this pit for baking pies or pizza. Love sitting out here at night with the moon, a guitar and a glass of scotch.

Nice,I made a separate cook spot for mine as well. Scoop the coals out of the big pit and cook on them. No need to deal with letting the fire die down during cooking. I will take a few pics if I get back up soon.

When I bought my house, I had a massive pile of busted up concrete in the woods, presumably from an old patio.
I leveled an area in the woods by hand, used the concrete chunks to build a small retaining wall, used to rest to line a path to the pit, then laid down playground chips on the path and pit area.
I used flat river rocks for the fire ring.
I've since made wooden benched for seating vs. the tree posts in the pictures

My idea is we have the first annual SCF fireside chat at Borregos'! I'll bring my blender.
I use a dryer drum for outdoor fires. Not original or pretty but effective.

Marguritas usually. My wife got this neat tabletop fire thingy for her birthday. Uses a 1lb propane bottle. Good with a quick beer when a friend stops by.

If you're on a hillside or raised patio, you can do what a few people have done in my neck of the woods: Bury a 6" pipe under the firepit, one end comes out in the center of the pit and the other end comes out a short distance away on the hillside or patio edge. Supplies air right to the middle of the fire, and if you're impatient you can use a leaf blower to get the fire cranking real fast.

Someone a few doors down from our cabin had put theirs outside their cabin so I asked a neighbour to mention to the owner that they are selling for around $1,000 in used upscale furniture stores. Modernist design is back in style.

Mine too. I found granite bricks from an old wood furnace. They now ring the truck rim. The bricks were mfct in the late 1900s in near maitland ontario. Each one weighs 40lbs, and is slightly curved. The furnaces were round. Guy dug them out of his basement.
Thx for the tip on the air space. Will be adding that.
