Looking for input.....a friend is asking for my help in repairing some rotted eaves. They are cantilevered out to the fascia, so I am seeing cutting them off at the house and putting a ledger there, then adding 2 posts to support the fascia. Only problem with that is that this is the entry to the house and a post would be right at the entry stairs, blocking the pathway....

Can you sister a tail on the side of the rafter/truss now? You would have to cut back a bird block, maybe using a multi tool? How much overhang anbd how much of it is rotted?
Do you have access to an attic in the area that needs repairing?

Quoting: toyota_mdt_tech Can you sister a tail on the side of the rafter/truss now? Yes, I could....but the tails are 50% shot
Quoting: toyota_mdt_tech You would have to cut back a bird block, maybe using a multi tool? Not quite sure what you mean here.
Quoting: toyota_mdt_tech How much overhang and how much of it is rotted? About 3 ft and half rotted
Quoting: toyota_mdt_tech Do you have access to an attic in the area that needs repairing? No it's at the sloped roof ends of the house.
I'm thinking of sistering on both sides of the tail and through-bolt it with glue.....should give them another 20 yrs.....

OK, I was thinking of sistering it back further past the top of the wall, but no access rules this out. Short of pulling off roof decking, I think your solution is probably they best short of tearing off roof. Curious, what size are the rafters, ie 2X6, 2X8 etc?

If the decking is still good and attic access is poor to none then I think double sistering with bolting is the only solution. Hopefully, you have enough good wood to bolt through.

Also I hope this is in your desert and not snow country as the weight bearing capacity won't be all that great with bolted pieces that amount to extensions.

Depending on thd design of the cabin you might even be able to add value at the same time.
Google knee braces, of overhang or eave braces / brackets for ideas.
