I've been contemplating deck railing ideas, hoping to use some of the many redwood branches laying around (yes, maybe too, uh, rustic). A friend suggested lashing instead of bolting, so I've been playing around with some cheap rope, kinda fun. The proper rope is apparently manila, I will need a few hundred bucks worth, maybe more than buying dimensional lumber and screws.

Any thoughts? No, probably not code worthy but not much around here is.

My only thought is about weather......too hot or dry or wet would cause the rope to deteriorate more quickly I would think......
I only like doing things once (when possible so i would want something sturdy/solid/forever.....
Just my $.02

I agree, but I've been looking online, lot of stuff around the world gets lashed! Perhaps backup screws.

Is there a marine rope you could use? It does have a certain look....

I'm a total rookie to rope tech, my reading indicates manilla is the choice for lashing, and marine too if I'm not mistaken, much stronger than sisal. Common, cheap polypropylene roap has some advantages, weather is one I believe, but not mentioned much for lashing, maybe stretch? This would not be a super high strength application, longevity may be more important as you say.

We have a minilla rope top rail on our top deck. It’s been there for ten years and is getting weak ,,should be replaced .
I soaked it in waterproofing before it went up ( Thompson’s water seal )
It shrinks and expands with heat and humidity conditions requires constant adjustments. Although it looks good when I replace it it will not be with Manila . The building inspector did not like it but did pass it in the end .
