Yep, I've seen a lot of this on those HGTV shows lately....looks pretty cool, i wouldn't mind trying it someday....

I am doing that on my cabin for the main floor (Hardie panels above). You have to use a thicker piece of siding because the heat from the torch can warp a thinner board, and make sure you get your siding with a "rabbited bevel" rather than just beveled. The rabbit joint creates an overlap between the boards so if there is a wildfire the fire can't race up the wall and get under the siding.

The great thing about charred wood is that it doesn't burn in a wildfire. Also do all your door and window trim.

My cabin is in the Georgian Bay area of Ontario. I just resided my cabin and almost went with a siding from South Parry Sound lumber. They have some pics and info here: URL
