But how much of an overhang? This tool calculates it for you. Just slide the bars to set your latitude, the angle of the window from due south, the windows size, the overhangs height above the window and depth and the app will show you how much of your window is protected on any day of the year (or any time of day).

One thing to remember: the longest day of the year is June 21st, the shortest is Dec 21st. These dates will show you how shaded the window will be when the sun is at its highest and lowest points in the sky. Therefore if you want your windows totally shaded on June 21st use that date to calculate the depth of your overhang.
But also check the depth of the overhang for Sept 21st and March 21st. On these days the sun is halfway between its highest and lowest points and you may find that you need a deeper overhang because although the amount of spring sunshine may be fine on March 21st the light may be too intense on Sept 21st (despite the sun being at the same height on both days).
