I've never seen a wood stove installation like this, but it is extremely practical. Usually the wood stove is in a corner or along a wall between a couple of windows, but I've never really liked those locations.
The problem is the wood stove always takes up so much room (clearances to combustibles) and what do you do with the area when the stove is not being used for 6-8 months of the year"?
This solution places the wood stove underneath and inside a concrete box. The top of the box can be used as a counter or shelf (the concrete will absorb a lot of heat and help radiate it as well).
If the concrete "box" is used as a room divider then the counter can also be a part of the kitchen prep area (especially if the living room floor is a step or two lower than the kitchen as shown). You still get a centrally located wood stove but also get to use the area around and above it when it's not in use.
