The guys who are going to build my cabin recently posted some photos of a tiny house they did late last summer. Total cost to customer was $18K. The home is 16X14X9 plus the cedar deck. The cost was increased by the difficulty of the location.
They built a storage area beneath the deck. In one of the photos, you can see a little access door on the right side facing the cabin. That's a good idea. I've been planning access to my crawlspace via a trapdoor inside the cabin but it would probably be a good idea to have a small "service door" on the outside, too. house_with_deck2.jpg

Thanks!
After much thought and weighing the pros and cons, I've decided to go with a gambrel cabin based on the mini-barns they build.
These guys are licensed, bonded general contractors with architectural and engineering services available so they build all sorts of structures, including small homes. They enjoy doing custom projects and will customize anything and build to suit. Their "bread-and-butter" is sheds, mini-barns, garages, and greenhouses but they love to build bigger and be creative. They have their own facilities where they build the components and then construct on your land.
Their prices are very reasonable and, so far, they've been great to deal with!

What's that siding material? Is it cement board? In boards, or panels or?
Anyone know?

Yes, I believe it's cement board. They give you your choice of lap-sided or panels. It looks like panels to me but I could very well be wrong.
They do gorgeous wood-sided buildings but with the fire threat these days, I've moved toward cement board myself, too.
