Going up next weekend to rent a sprayer and stain the bunk house...
Bri is going to stain while I split wood...
Its rough cut pine/12x14
Anyone have any suggestions on type of stain and how much?

I think I would make sure it is water based instead of oil based. So much easer to clean up at the end. What brands does your local suppler have, are you near a Home Depot or Lowes?

I've always used TWP (total wood preservative) stains. Oil based stain but seems to last and protect longer then other stains. Cabin looks great. Good luck.

i used behr stain. solid. two gallons on a 12x20. I could have used another gallon.
a sprayer doesn't need brushing afterwords. i've learned to put my time into prep. taping plastic over anything that doesn't need/want paint.
i found the big flappy thing you can buy useful. it's a handle with a big stiff plastic sheet on the end ... you can mask on the go with it so for areas i wasn't that worried about overspray (soffits, under the rain gutters, end of wall ...) i just used that. you could use one of those house for sale signs or someat' as a replacement.
did i mention put your time into masking prep. yup.

Lowes and home depot on the way up.
Prep work should not be too bad.
3 small windows and the door handle.

I used Olympic water based semi-transparent cedar stain. Before and after photos.

Water based product will last longer than oil based. Recommended spread rate on most stains is 300 to 500 square feet per gallon, spraying, you should plan on an additional 25%. In most applications, 2 coats is specified.
I would respectfully disagree with Creeky as regards to brushing. We spray and back brush. If you don't you end up with a double layer of material where the spray patterns overlap. It may look good immediately, but down the road, the areas where it is overlapped will be more durable. With stains, this means those areas will hold color better and you could have a striped building in a year or two.
My project that Owen built last year is getting 2 coats of Sherwin Williams Woodscapes Water Based Semi Transparent Stain as soon as the ice is out.
FYI, I worked for Sherwin Williams for 17 years and another company that sold, Sikkens, Cabbots, and a few others. I spent a lot of time looking at different products before I chose the one I will be using.
