On the last cabin I built, I went ahead and ordered the expensive rubber chimney boot. Before when I had put a chimney in metal, I was able to cut and fit a regular galvanized metal flashing. This last roof had a snow slide and crushed that rubber boot. It caved in and started leaking. I'm headed out to repair it today. I'm not too sure what to do. I suppose I'll need to make some sort of deflector. Anyway I don't think I'll use these ever again.

I've used a heavier gauge metal flashing to form a cricket. Screw it to the tops of the ribs with a dab of gutter caulk on the screw threads. Straighten out the boot, re-bed it, and add more screws to seal around the chimney.

Tom , this cricket you talk about, is it a v-shaped cap above the chimney, Like a little roof? I was thinking about bringing a short section of ridge cap.

Exactly, Owen. I used a heavier gauge metal, but the ridge cap may work as well...Especially if the top is against the chimney.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I'll be trying to build my own today, but if need be I can order one and wait 'til later to install.

This is what I used. I have a steep 7 1/2-12 pitch and bought a "sno-jack", in addition to my 2 top supports what are made out if 1.5" heavy galvanized metal piping supporting the top of the chimney, I have bought the sno jack for the bottom. Its act as a gusset to tie it in even better and a knife to slice and deflect any sliding snow and saves the chimney base. Owen, the flange wasnt the problem, just not enough protection.

I know it says vent saver and you should install them for vents too, but the cable wrap and strap that hook around the pipe was large enough for my 6" double walled insulated pipe.
